Oleksandr stood by the window, watching the wind sway the yellow and red leaves on the trees.
Autumn had arrived in the village where his family lived.
Outside the window, there was a view of a traditional ukrainskyi house with a thatched roof, surrounded by a garden.
A big day was approaching - the Harvest Festival.
All the relatives were gathering together to celebrate the occasion.
Oleksandr had mixed feelings.
He loved his family, but he was tired of their expectations.
His mother, Nadiya, was particularly persistent.
She always insisted that it was time for Oleksandr to get married and stay within the family circle.
"It's time to face reality, son," Nadiya would often say while making varenyky in the kitchen.
Oleksandr would just sigh in response.
He dreamed of freedom and had plans that did not include the traditional path.
In the yard, near a huge table laden with food, the family dinner began.
The air was filled with the scent of baked potatoes and honey cookies.
Neighbors brought homemade wine, and everyone merrily exchanged news.
"Oleksandre, have you decided what you'll do?"
Nadiya asked him during dinner.
The noise was ubiquitous, but this phrase hung in the air.
It was a moment he dreaded.
Oleksandr's heart pounded, but he decided to speak from the heart.
"I want to follow my path.
I want to travel and find myself," he said, holding his breath.
Suddenly, unexpected support came from Bohdan, his jokester cousin.
"You know, Sasha, I felt the pressure too.
But we all have to live our own lives," Bohdan confessed, surprising everyone.
This admission shocked the family, but it brought a new understanding to them.
Nadiya looked at her son in a new light, and her eyes began to warm.
"Perhaps you're right.
We just want you to be happy," she said quietly.
In that moment, Oleksandr realized that his honesty had brought harmony.
The family began to open up to each other with renewed strength, embracing support and understanding of each other's choices.
On the cool autumn evening, among the golden leaves, Oleksandr felt at home in a new way.
And, in the end, that was the best gift for the Harvest Festival.
