Rimski sonce je žarelo nad mestom Pompeji.
The Roman sun shone over the city of Pompeji.
Ulice so brnele od življenja.
The streets buzzed with life.
Trgovci so klicali svoje ponudbe, otroci so se igrali v prahu.
Merchants called out their offers, children played in the dust.
Among them, Matej, a scholar from the north, quietly moved through the streets.
His eyes were searching for something special - an ancient scroll rumored to be hidden in a villa on the edge of the city.
It was a hot summer day, the air was heavy.
V daljavi je gora Vezuv tiho kadila.
In the distance, Mount Vezuv smoked quietly.
Matej knew he had to be quick and cautious.
His heart was filled with a desire for knowledge, but also fear of loss.
Ana, a local with a warm smile, was selling fruit at the market.
Luka, njen mlajši brat, je pomagal nositi košare.
Luka, her younger brother, was helping carry baskets.
Spoznala sta Mateja in mu ponudila sveže fige.
They met Matej and offered him fresh figs.
"Potreboval boš, ko boš iskal ta zvitek," je rekla Ana, medtem ko mu je Luka pomignil v smeri vil.
"You'll need them when you search for that scroll," Ana said, while Luka gestured toward the villa.
As Matej approached the villa, he felt the ground tremble.
V ta trenutek se je Vezuv prebudil.
At that moment, Vezuv awoke.
Temni oblaki pepela so se dvigali visoko v zrak.
Dark clouds of ash rose high into the air.
Ljudje so kričali, panika je zajela mesto.
People screamed, panic gripped the city.
Matej je vedel, da mora izbrati.
Matej knew he had to choose.
Zvitek ali življenje.
The scroll or life.
Potem je zaslišal Luko: "Matej, teci!
Then he heard Luka: "Matej, run!"
" Toda v tistem trenutku, ko je gorje raslo, je Matej zaupal svojemu instinktu.
But in that moment, as disaster grew, Matej trusted his instinct.
He ran into the villa, up the stairs, past the rooms, until he found a small chest.
Zvitek!
The scroll!
Tam je bil, zavit v platno, nepoškodovan.
There it was, wrapped in cloth, unharmed.
With the scroll in hand, Matej raced back onto the street.
Pridev pepela in pljuski kamenja so padali iz neba.
A storm of ash and showers of stones fell from the sky.
Ana in Luka sta bila že daleč pred njim.
Ana and Luka were already far ahead of him.
He ran as fast as his legs would carry him, without looking back.
At the edge of the city, when it seemed all would be lost, Matej found a group of people fleeing from Pompeji.
Z njimi je bil končno na varnem.
With them, he was finally safe.
He held the scroll tightly to himself, a warm memory of a place that would soon be no more.
As he moved away, Matej looked back, panting, at his daring exploit and felt gratitude.
He learned that knowledge is valuable, but the life we have is the greatest gift.
Vezuv now rested behind him, and the connection with the scroll gave him a new perspective on the world and his place in it.
He was comforted by the thought that he was not only a scholar but a man intertwined with both knowledge and life.
