В прохладное утро поздней осени, когда листья в Ботаническом Саду Москвы окрашивались в яркие оттенки оранжевого и коричневого, Виктор стоял у пруда.

On a chilly morning in late autumn, when the leaves in the Botanical Garden of Moscow were painted in bright shades of orange and brown, Victor stood by the pond.

Холодный ветер играл с голыми ветвями деревьев, шурша под ногами.

"Борис где-то здесь," ответил Виктор, вглядываясь в воду.

"Boris is somewhere here," replied Victor, peering into the water.

Борис, его черепаха, сбежал из террариума, когда Виктор чистил его.

Boris, his turtle, had escaped from the terrarium while Victor was cleaning it.

Виктор знал каждую тропинку и уголок сада.

Victor knew every path and corner of the garden.

Работая тут много лет садовником, он выучил все обитатели растительного царства.

Having worked here as a gardener for many years, he had learned all the inhabitants of the plant kingdom.

Но его тайной страстью были рептилии.

But his secret passion was reptiles.

Борис был его гордостью.

Boris was his pride.

Внезапно Миша, их общий друг, подбежал к ним, показывая рукой на толпу туристов.

Suddenly, Misha, their mutual friend, ran up to them, pointing at the crowd of tourists.

"Они думают, что Борис - редкий вид!

"They think Boris is a rare species!"

"Туристы щебетали и фотографировали, как Борис важно плыл недалеко от берега.

The tourists chattered and took photographs as Boris swam importantly not far from the shore.

Виктор нахмурился.

Victor frowned.

Если туристы решат, что Бориса нужно поймать, это усложнит спасение.

If the tourists decided that Boris needed to be caught, it would complicate the rescue.

" - спросила Анна.

Виктор задумался и затем улыбнулся.

"Туристы заинтересованно обернулись.

The tourists turned with interest.

Виктор кивнул Анне и Мише, чтобы они тихо подкрались к Борису.

Victor nodded to Anna and Misha to quietly sneak up to Boris.

Только Виктор готовился поймать Бориса, как малыш закричал: "Смотрите, ещё одна большая черепаха!

Just as Victor was getting ready to catch Boris, a child shouted, "Look, another big turtle!"

"Все повернулись.

Everyone turned around.

Виктор быстро схватил Бориса и спрятал его в куртку.

Victor quickly grabbed Boris and tucked him into his jacket.

"Нет-нет, это просто коряга," спокойным голосом сказал он, указывая туда, где действительно покачивалась ветка.

"No, no, that's just a log," he said calmly, pointing to where a branch really was bobbing.

Туристы успокоились и снова заинтересовались клёнами.

The tourists relaxed and became interested in the maples again.

Виктор, Анна и Миша незаметно удалились.

Victor, Anna, and Misha slipped away unnoticed.

Борис выглянул из куртки и, казалось, весело подмигнул Виктору.

Boris peeked out from the jacket and seemed to wink cheerfully at Victor.

Виктор улыбнулся черепахе.

Victor smiled at the turtle.

В тот момент он понял, что Борис - настоящий исследователь.

At that moment, he understood that Boris was a true explorer.

"Пора сделать твой дом больше," подумал Виктор, планируя новое, более просторное жилище для своего друга.

"It's time to make your home bigger," Victor thought, planning a new, more spacious dwelling for his friend.
