Anya была новой пациенткой.

Anya was a new patient.

Her past was shrouded in mystery.

Она часто разгадывала кроссворды и смотрела на прохожих из окна с невидимой улыбкой.

She often solved crosswords and watched passersby from the window with an invisible smile.

Однажды вечером Дмитрий подошел к ней.

One evening, Dmitry approached her.

— Anya, ты слышала, что произошло на прошлой неделе? — тихо спросил он.

"Anya, did you hear what happened last week?" he asked quietly.

Она взглянула на него, будто оценивая. Потом ответила загадочно:

— Тени в ночи всегда больше, чем кажутся.

"Shadows in the night are always bigger than they seem."

Он нахмурился, не понимая.

He frowned, not understanding.

Через несколько дней Дмитрий решил пойти в подвал, где давно никто не был.

A few days later, Dmitry decided to go to the basement, where no one had been for a long time.

Он знал, что начальство не одобряет таких походов.

He knew the management would not approve of such ventures.

Но его желание узнать оказалось сильнее.

But his desire to find out was stronger.

С фонариком в руке Дмитрий осторожно спустился по ступенькам.

With a flashlight in hand, Dmitry carefully descended the steps.

В воздухе витал запах сырости и пыли.

The air was filled with the smell of dampness and dust.

У дальней стены он заметил нечто странное — толстую железную крышку.

By the far wall, he noticed something strange—a thick iron cover.

Вернувшись наверх, он снова нашел Anyу.

Returning upstairs, he found Anya again.

— Что ты знаешь об этом подвале? — требовательно спросил он.

"What do you know about this basement?" he demanded.

Anya кивнула.

Anya nodded.

— Там, где стены шепчут, слушай внимательно. Ночью кто-то ушёл туда, — сказала она, намекая на железную крышку.

"Where the walls whisper, listen carefully. At night, someone went there," she said, hinting at the iron cover.

С этой информацией Дмитрий решился: он вернется в подвал.

With this information, Dmitry made up his mind: he would return to the basement.

На следующее утро, вооружившись инструментами, он открыл тяжелую крышку.

The next morning, armed with tools, he opened the heavy cover.

Под ней обнаружился узкий тоннель, ведущий далеко в лес.

Underneath, he discovered a narrow tunnel leading far into the forest.

Дмитрий сообщил об этом сразу начальству.

Dmitry immediately reported this to the management.

Полиция быстро разобралась, что тоннель вёл за пределы больницы.

The police quickly figured out that the tunnel led beyond the boundaries of the hospital.

Исчезнувший пациент нашел выход к свободе.

The missing patient had found an escape route to freedom.

С тех пор безопасность больницы была усилена.

Since then, the hospital's security was reinforced.

Дмитрий чувствовал себя гордостью.

Dmitry felt proud.

Он понял, что может быть сыщиком, а не просто медбратом.

He realized that he could be a detective, not just an orderly.

Anya больше не была так отчуждена.

Anya was no longer so distant.

Однажды она доверительно сказала Дмитрию:

One day she confided to Dmitry:

— Спасибо. Теперь я знаю, кому могу доверять.

"Thank you. Now I know whom I can trust."

Летний вечер снова наступил над Москвой.

A summer evening settled over Moscow once again.

Дмитрий, немного уставший, но довольный, посмотрел на Anyу.

Dmitry, a little tired but content, looked at Anya.

Некоторым загадкам все же суждено быть разгаданными.

Some mysteries are indeed meant to be solved.
