Tiago adjusted the thin scarf around his neck, looking around with wide eyes.

The wind cut like sharp blades in the Arctic tundra.

The skin on Tiago and Inês's faces burned with cold.

  • Eles estavam no lugar errado.

They were in the wrong place.

  • O helicóptero devia ter deixado o grupo numa plataforma observatória.

The helicopter was supposed to drop the group on an observatory platform.

Now, they were lost in a frozen sea of uninhabited land.

  • Inês observava o horizonte.

    Inês watched the horizon.

A vast gray and white expanse stretched beyond what the eyes could see.

The tundra, with hardy shrubs sprouting from the frozen ground, seemed endless.

  • Sem rede de telemóvel, sem mapas físicos.

No cell network, no physical maps.

  • Apenas o vento como companhia.

    Only the wind for company.

She took a deep breath, knowing that panic would not help.

“We have to keep going,” suggested Tiago, trying to sound confident.

  • “Talvez aquele ponto escuro seja uma vila.” Inês balançou a cabeça.

“Maybe that dark spot is a village.” Inês shook her head.

  • “Tiago, precisamos ficar aqui.

“Tiago, we need to stay here.

  • É perigoso andar sem rumo.

    It's dangerous to walk aimlessly.

  • Eles vão perceber o erro e vir nos buscar.” Tiago hesitou.

They will realize the mistake and come to get us.” Tiago hesitated.

He wanted to prove he had the courage of an explorer, but the cold was relentless.

Inês was calm, practical, and he knew it; however, pride made her words sound like a challenge.

  • O dia avançava.

    The day wore on.

  • As sombras alongavam-se, e a temperatura caía.

Shadows lengthened, and the temperature dropped.

Inês began gathering everything she could find: small branches, pieces of dry grass.

Tiago, looking at the gray skies, swallowed his pride.

  • “Inês, vamos fazer um abrigo.

    “Inês, let's make a shelter.

You're right.” Working together, they huddled beneath an improvised cover, built with stones and the shrubs they found.

  • Tiago esfregava as mãos, tentando manter a amarga frieza à distância.

Tiago rubbed his hands, trying to keep the bitter cold at bay.

  • “Devemos fazer um fogo.

    “We should make a fire.

Smoke... for the helicopter.” Inês remembered her childhood scouting lessons.

Surprisingly, she managed to create a small flame with friction, which soon grew into considerable smoke.

The two waited, their eyes fixed on the sky.

Finally, the distant sound of rotors came like music to their ears.

A helicopter appeared, circling the area until it found the smoke.

  • Tiago e Inês acenaram, batendo palmas com alegria e alívio.

Tiago and Inês waved, clapping with joy and relief.

Back to civilization, wrapped in warm blankets, Tiago reflected on the experience.

  • “Confesso, subestimei isso tudo”, admitiu a Inês, sorrindo timidamente.

“I admit, I underestimated it all,” he confessed to Inês, smiling sheepishly.

“I should have listened to you sooner.” Inês squeezed his shoulder, despite her own shivering from the cold.

  • “Sobrevivemos.

    “We survived.

We both learned something.” The hearts of Tiago and Inês warmed with the lesson learned: humility, courage, and the strength of working as a team, even in the most extreme winter.
