In a picturesque neighborhood of Lisboa, where colorful houses line cobblestone streets, LĂșcia woke up to the sound of birds singing.
Era final da primavera.
It was the end of spring.
The aroma of flowers filled the air, preparing the residents for the Dia de Portugal, the national holiday that brought friends and neighbors together.
LĂșcia era uma mulher determinada e independente.
LĂșcia was a determined and independent woman.
She spent the morning pruning rose bushes in her garden, but the doctor's words echoed in her mind.
"Perhaps you need surgery, LĂșcia," he had told her at the last appointment.
O pensamento perturbava-a.
The thought disturbed her.
She needed to feel capable, but the fear of relying on others was growing.
Tiago, o vizinho solĂcito, apareceu perto da entrada do jardim.
Tiago, the helpful neighbor, appeared near the garden entrance.
"Bom dia, LĂșcia!
"Good morning, LĂșcia!
Precisas de ajuda com isso?"
Do you need help with that?"
"NĂŁo, Tiago, estou bem.
"No, Tiago, I'm fine.
Obrigada," respondeu LĂșcia, com um sorriso forçado.
Thank you," LĂșcia replied with a forced smile.
Tiago was always helpful, but LĂșcia preferred to handle everything on her own.
During the work, she paused for a moment to breathe.
A cabeça começou a girar e sentiu a energia a esvair-se.
Her head started to spin, and she felt her energy drain away.
"Chega, vou descansar," pensou.
"Enough, I'll rest," she thought.
But the idea of asking for help didn't leave her.
The next day, Marta, the always-busy but affectionate niece, came for a visit.
"Aunt LĂșcia, I heard you're planning a party for the Dia de Portugal.
Precisas que te dĂȘ uma mĂŁo?"
Do you need a hand?"
"NĂŁo te preocupes, Marta.
"Don't worry, Marta.
Eu consigo," respondeu LĂșcia, escondendo a ponta de cansaço que lhe invadia a voz.
I can do it," LĂșcia replied, hiding the hint of fatigue that invaded her voice.
However, as she bent down to pick some weeds, everything went black.
LĂșcia perdeu os sentidos.
LĂșcia lost consciousness.
Tiago, que estava a regar as plantas do outro lado da rua, viu-a cair.
Tiago, who was watering plants across the street, saw her fall.
He rushed to her, quickly followed by Marta who had just arrived.
Together they lifted LĂșcia and laid her on the living room sofa.
Upon regaining consciousness, LĂșcia slowly opened her eyes.
"Estou bem, estou bem," insistiu, embora estivesse claro que nĂŁo estava.
"I'm fine, I'm fine," she insisted, although it was clear that she was not.
"Precisas de descansar, tia.
"You need to rest, aunt.
Please, let us help," Marta pleaded, with concern in her eyes.
In those silent moments, LĂșcia understood that accepting help was not a weakness.
Era, na verdade, uma força comunitåria.
It was, in fact, a communal strength.
"Talvez... nĂŁo me fizesse mal aceitar alguma ajuda," disse, finalmente.
"Perhaps... it wouldn't hurt to accept some help," she finally said.
Os dias seguintes foram ocupados.
The following days were busy.
Marta e Tiago cuidavam do jardim e das decoraçÔes.
Marta and Tiago took care of the garden and decorations.
LĂșcia, sentada numa cadeira confortĂĄvel, supervisionava e dava instruçÔes, finalmente aceitando o apoio dos outros.
LĂșcia, sitting in a comfortable chair, supervised and gave instructions, finally accepting the support of others.
No Dia de Portugal, o jardim estava glorioso.
On Dia de Portugal, the garden was glorious.
Plantas vibrantes e bandeiras coloridas decoravam o espaço.
Vibrant plants and colorful flags decorated the space.
Neighbors gathered in celebration, music and laughter filling the air.
LĂșcia sorriu, sentindo-se parte de algo maior.
LĂșcia smiled, feeling part of something bigger.
Her independence was not lost; it was just different, enriched by the care and support of those around her.
"Thank you," she said to Tiago and Marta, with tears of gratitude in her eyes.
She had discovered that sometimes, opening the door to support was the most courageous step of all.
And so, LĂșcia celebrated the Dia de Portugal with a light heart, surrounded by the warmth of her community.
