The leaves fell gently from the trees on the grounds of the boarding school.
It was autumn, and the world turned orange, red, and yellow.
Sanne walked calmly along a path that led to the little shop outside the school.
Daan en Tijs liepen naast haar.
Daan and Tijs walked beside her.
They talked cheerfully, but Sanne was deep in thought.
She was thinking about the new school supplies she needed.
Perfect things to impress her demanding parents and her strict teachers.
But how could she do that with the limited money she had?
Just past the wooden door of the shop, the smell of fresh books and the shelves full of colorful notebooks and pens caught their attention.
Sanne zuchtte.
Sanne sighed.
Many things she wanted were not in stock, and the money she had was not enough for the nicest items.
Daan, always cheerful, picked up a glittery notebook and held it up with a laugh.
"Misschien moeten we hier een grap over schrijven!"
"Maybe we should write a joke in here!"
Sanne glimlachte flauw.
Sanne smiled faintly.
Tijs daarentegen snoof zachtjes.
Tijs, on the other hand, snorted softly.
He seemed a bit lost, as if he missed a piece of home.
When her eyes fell on Tijs, Sanne heard him softly mumble, "I don't even know what supplies I need to buy.
Het voelt zo vreemd hier."
It feels so strange here."
Zijn stem klonk verdrietig en onzeker.
His voice sounded sad and uncertain.
Ze voelde een golf van medeleven.
She felt a wave of sympathy.
She had hoped to buy something stylish, but Tijs needed help.
Aarzelend liep ze naar hem toe.
Hesitantly, she walked up to him.
"Zullen we samen kijken?"
"Shall we look together?"
stelde ze voor.
she suggested.
Tijs looked up in surprise, a bit of gratitude shining in his eyes.
Daan, always the jokester, joined them and made silly comments about the most boring notebooks, causing Tijs to finally show his first genuine smile.
The trio browsed through colored pencils, pens, and notebooks.
Daan suggested the funniest items, while Sanne helped with the practical choices.
In the end, Sanne chose simple but useful supplies, while Tijs got a bit of everything.
Sanne realized that the warmth of their new friendship was more important than the perfection she had been striving for.
As they left the shop, a fresh autumn breeze blew past them, and Sanne felt lighter.
Daan was probably telling another joke, and Tijs walked more confidently beside them than before.
Friendship, Sanne realized, was the best thing she could have at school this year.
Perfection might be important, but it was the heart that truly mattered.
En dat deed ze met volle overtuiging.
And she believed this wholeheartedly.
