In the early autumn, when the leaves change color and a fresh breeze blows through Amsterdam, something significant happened in the life of Sanne.
On a chilly morning, in a historic building with high windows where the soft sunlight streamed in, people were patiently standing in line to cast their votes.
This was the polling station where Sanne, a young professional, found herself.
Sanne stood with her ballot in hand.
She looked at the faces of her friends, Bram and Koen.
They were full of conviction and passionate about who they believed was the right candidate.
"He's really going to make a difference," said Bram with conviction.
"Yes, he's the best choice," added Koen.
Maar Sanne zweeg.
But Sanne remained silent.
In her mind, there was a conflict going on.
She knew she had to decide, but the pressure of their words weighed heavily on her shoulders.
The space around them was full of movement, the sound of soft coughing and the rustling of paper ballots.
Sanne looked outside, at the trees that seemed to be dropping their leaves as if they were observing everything impartially.
She felt almost as unsteady as those leaves in the wind.
"Wat denk je, Sanne?"
"What do you think, Sanne?"
vroeg Koen, zijn blik vol verwachting.
asked Koen, his gaze full of expectation.
But instead of answering, Sanne made her choice with the pencil in her hand.
She listened to her heart, her own voice in this sea of opinions.
Het moment van de waarheid kwam snel.
The moment of truth came quickly.
Sanne stepped to the ballot and marked her choice.
Her hand trembled, but she felt an unexpected calm come over her.
She had chosen for herself, not for Bram or Koen.
As she dropped her ballot into the ballot box, she felt a weight slide off her shoulders.
The boys looked at her, surprised by her decision.
Maar Sanne glimlachte alleen maar.
But Sanne just smiled.
She felt free, no matter what they thought.
She knew that this choice was hers, and no one else's.
After the three friends had left the building, Sanne walked ahead, with her head held high.
She knew she could always choose her own path.
And that gave her the courage to do so in the future.
Sanne was no longer someone who let herself be guided by others, but a woman who dared to let her own voice be heard.
