Rīgas vasaras diena bija pilna saules un mirgojoša gaisma ielejās pa Elīnas viesistabas aizkariem.
A summer day in Rīga was full of sun and sparkling light flooding in through the curtains of Elīna's living room.
Galdu klāja dažādi gardi ģimenes favorīti, tostarp vecmāmiņas marinētās zivis un svaigie dārzeņi no laukiem.
The table was set with various delicious family favorites, including grandma's pickled fish and fresh vegetables from the countryside.
The walls of the house resonated with laughter and chatter as the family gathered around the table.
Elīna, ar dzirkstošu humoru acīs, uzmeta skatienu savam onkulim Jānim.
Elīna, with a sparkling humor in her eyes, glanced at her uncle Jānis.
He had arrived with an endless stream of stories and a stockpile of Latvian idioms with which he wanted to impress and entertain.
Tomēr viņš bieži tos sajauca, padarot katru mēģinājumu par potenciālu komisku fiasko.
However, he often mixed them up, turning each attempt into a potential comedic fiasco.
"Ziniet nu, nav ko gaidīt, laiks stāstā," Jānis smaidot teica, lauku solus turēdams savā bagāžā un paplašinot rokas kā saimnieks.
"You know, no need to wait, time for a story," Jānis said smiling, holding onto the country benches in his luggage and spreading his arms like a host.
"Kā teikts, sava laiva ausīs - turējiet acis vaļā!
"As the saying goes, your boat in your ears—keep your eyes open!"
"Elīna pasmaidīja, neslēpjot sāņdevi.
Elīna smiled, not hiding her sidelong glance.
"Onkuli Jāni, laikam gribi teikt, ka 'savā laivā stūrē pats', vai ne?
"Uncle Jānis, I think you mean, 'steer your boat yourself', right?"
" viņa izjautāja, ķiķinot.
she questioned, giggling.
Andris, playing on his phone, rolled his eyes at the archive with one eye, already starting to whisper about the funny feeling.
Jānis nebija atrunājams.
Jānis was not to be dissuaded.
Viņš uzmeta pārējam galdam izaicinošu skatienu un turpināja, neatzīstot savu kļūdu.
He cast a challenging look at the rest of the table and continued without acknowledging his mistake.
"Ja gailis dzied, tad sēžu bikses groziņā," viņš turpināja, ar aizrautību smaidot.
"If the rooster crows, then I sit my pants in the basket," he continued, smiling with enthusiasm.
Elīna, līdz ausīm smejoties, centās izskaidrot, drosmīgi cenšoties tikt skaidrībā.
Elīna, laughing to the ears, tried to explain, bravely attempting to get it straight.
"Ak, onkuli, laikam gailis dzied vistu sprostā, ja?
"Oh, uncle, I think the rooster crows in the chicken coop, right?"
" viņa teica, kad Jānis nolocījās vēl dziļāk saroslēja.
she said as Jānis bent even further down, smiling more broadly.
Tomēr komēdija turpinājās.
Yet the comedy continued.
Jānis, picking up the pace, launched into a story about a lion's kindness settling on the hips of an emirate.
Elīna and Andris were already rolling and laughing in their chairs when Jānis finally managed to spark interest.
"Nu, jūs bērni," viņš uzsāka, "kurš te īsti ir līdz ausīm ielecis?
"Well, you kids," he began, "who here is really neck-deep?"
"Pēc Elīnas, atbrīvojot elpu no smieklīgas ķicīgas cenas pret brūci, beigās norādīja: "Onkuli, laikam neviens nav ielēcis ausīs.
After Elīna, releasing a breath from the hilarious giggling price against the wound, finally pointed out: "Uncle, I think no one is neck-deep.
Bet tu ieleci mūsu sirdīs.
But you fell into our hearts."
" Galda vidū saistībai aplausus sāka, kā Jānis patiesībā izrāvās, zinot, ka pats sev radīja situācijas humoru.
A round of applause started in the middle of the table for the bond as Jānis indeed broke out, knowing he had created a humorous situation himself.
And so, they all sat at the table, heart content with Jānis and his unsuccessful expressions that saturated the atmosphere.
Citādi divnieks kļuva par četrotni, viņi atteicās no Jāņa, kurš beidzot apprecēja un pievienojās smiekliem, baudot ģimenes sabiedrību.
Otherwise a duo became a quartet, they didn't let go of Jānis, who finally joined in the laughter, enjoying the family's company.
Viņš saprata, ka mīlestība un prieks nekad nav idiomaticki jāinterpretē precīzi perfektajā kontekstā.
He realized that love and joy never need to be idiomatically interpreted perfectly in context.
