On a spring afternoon, when the sunlight warmed the walls of a Rīga high school, Vilnis held a coffee cup in his hand and watched the students rushing to their classes.
Viņa acis meklēja vienu seju starp citiem – viņa meitas Ievas.
His eyes searched for one face among the others - that of his daughter, Ieva.
Viļa sirds kļuva smagāka, redzot Ievu bieži skumju un attālu.
Vilnis's heart grew heavier as he often saw Ieva sad and distant.
When they were at home, Vilnis tried to talk to Ieva about school and friends, but her responses were short, as if her thoughts were elsewhere.
Vilnis bija viens tēvs, kurš centās darīt visu, lai viņa meitai būtu viss nepieciešamais.
Vilnis was a single father who tried his best to provide everything his daughter needed.
Tomēr kādreiz viņam šķita, ka Ieva attālinās arvien vairāk.
Yet, sometimes it seemed to him that Ieva was growing more distant.
Vienā pirmdienas pēcpusdienā, Vilnis saņēma ziņojumu par vecāku sapulci.
One Monday afternoon, Vilnis received a message about a parent-teacher meeting.
It was Ieva, who explained with some concern: "We need to discuss things with the teachers at school."
" Tā bija Vilņa iespēja.
This was Vilnis's opportunity.
Sapulces dienā, kamēr viņi brauca uz skolu, pavasara vējš viegli kustējās koku lapās, un putnu dziesma aizvirzīja domas prom no raizēm.
On the day of the meeting, while they drove to the school, the spring wind gently moved the tree leaves, and the birds' songs carried thoughts away from worries.
When they entered the school, the meeting with the teachers was about to begin.
During the meeting, there were many praises and commendations for Ieva, but to Vilnis, it felt like a prod.
He knew his daughter well and thus stood up: "Ieva, I know there's a lot of pressure, but I want you to know that I'm here for you."
"Ieva iekrita klusumā.
Ieva fell into silence.
Viņas sirds baidījās, taču tajā pašā laikā viņa juta spēcīgu vēlmi būt saprasta.
Her heart was afraid, yet at the same time, she felt a strong desire to be understood.
Drošdama, viņa sacīja: "Tēti, es tikai gribu, lai tu uzticētos man.
Bravely, she said, "Dad, I just want you to trust me.
Es jūtos ļoti kontrolēta.
I feel very controlled."
"Istabā valdīja klusums, pēc kura Vilnis ļoti prātīgi atbildēja: "Es to centos tikai tāpēc, ka gribēju tev palīdzēt.
A silence filled the room, after which Vilnis cautiously replied, "I only tried because I wanted to help you.
But I understand that you also need space."
"Tā bija sapratne, ko viņi caur grūtībām sasniedza.
This was an understanding they reached through difficulties.
Pēc sapulces viņi izgāja no skolas, vienojoties, ka sāks jaunu ceļu, kurā Vilnis vairāk uzticēsies Ievai, bet Ieva viņu vairāk informēs par savu dzīvi.
After the meeting, they left the school, agreeing to start a new path where Vilnis would trust Ieva more, and Ieva would keep him more informed about her life.
That summer came to them with blooming flowers and hope.
Vilnis and Ieva smiled at each other, ready to navigate through life together, not just as father and daughter, but as friends who had found each other anew.
