  • Sa lárshráid na Glendalough samhraidh, shéid gaoth bhog idir na crainn ard agus an naomhchomhaoin a bhí thart timpeall na n-áitreabh.

In the main street of Glendalough in summer, a gentle wind blew between the tall trees and the holy communion around the dwellings.

  • Bhí Sinead ann leis na páistí, Declan agus Aoife.

Sinead was there with the children, Declan and Aoife.

  • Bhí an triúr acu ag siúl tríd an suíomh cumhach, iad ag breathnú ar na túir cloch is na túamaí glasa.

The three of them were walking through the solemn site, looking at the stone towers and green tombs.

  • Bhí Sinead ag súil le suaimhneas a fháil tar éis an chaillteanais mhóir a bhí acu le déanaí.

Sinead was hoping for peace after the great loss they had recently experienced.

  • Bhí a fear chéile imithe uathu, agus ní raibh éinne acu fós tagtha ar ais.

Her husband had passed away, and none of them had yet recovered.

  • "Féach ansin, Mamaí," arsa Aoife, ag cur a lámh beag i dtreo an tuama ard.

"Look there, Mommy," said Aoife, pointing her small hand towards the tall tomb.

  • D'úsáid Sinead gach focal grámhar le freagairt, ach laistigh, bhí sí fós míshuaimhneach.

Sinead replied with all the loving words she could muster, but inside, she was still unsettled.

  • Tháinig an lá a bhí pleanáilte ag Sinead le haghaidh suirbhéireacht intinne cois locha.

The planned day arrived for Sinead to do some soul-searching by the lake.

  • Bhí An Locha Uachtarach ciúin agus tais.

The Upper Lake was quiet and damp.

  • Shuigh sí síos in aice leis na páistí.

She sat down next to the children.

  • Níor labhair sí, ach chuala sí gach blíp uisce agus glór éan san aer.

She didn't speak, but she heard every water splash and bird sound in the air.

  • Rinne sí iarracht an torann a ligint isteach isteach i gcroílár a haigne.

She tried hard to let the noises sink into the core of her mind.

  • Thosaigh siad le meditation treoraithe.

    They started with guided meditation.

  • Bhí Sinead ag streachailt leis an tost inmheánach.

Sinead struggled with the internal silence.

  • Ach sa nóiméad sin féin, rinne sí iarracht dhílis.

Yet in that very moment, she made a sincere effort.

  • Go mall, fuair sí an misneach, agus tháinig deora ina súile.

Slowly, she found courage, and tears came to her eyes.

  • Lig sí scaoileadh ligean amach atá stóráilte aici le fada.

She allowed herself to release what she had stored for so long.

  • Chonaic Declan, agus d'úsáid sé a lámh bheag le lámh Aoife a bhaint amach.

Declan saw and reached out with his small hand for Aoife's hand.

  • "Tá muid anseo, Mamaí," a dúirt sé, a ghlór bog ach soléirithe.

"We are here, Mommy," he said softly but clearly.

  • Bhí Sinead gol go hiomlán anois, fuair sí an misneach chun insíonn an pian a bhí inti.

Sinead was crying fully now; she found the courage to express the pain she felt.

  • "Tá sé deacair uaim.

    "It's hard for me.

  • Ach níor mhaith liom go n-oileodh sibh leo féin," ar sise, a croí os cionn a blocál.

But I don’t want you both to grow up alone," she said, her heart opened above its blockade.

  • Bhí Aoife agus Declan ag caint ina dhiaidh, ag roinnt na bristeacha beaga a bhí acu.

Aoife and Declan spoke afterward, sharing the little fractures each had.

  • Lig siad amach a gcuid imní, a gcuid suimeanna le chéile, agus thosaigh an díospóireacht foleimhe idir iad ar bhíonn ann.

They let out their worries, their mutual interests, and began an unspoken conversation between them on what lay ahead.

  • Ar deireadh, d'éirigh an chlann le chéile, lámh isteach i lámh, ag siúl ar ais go mall.

Finally, the family stood together, hand in hand, walking back slowly.

  • Bhí rún nua acu.

    They held a new promise.

  • Bhí sé níos mó ná díreach focail, is geallúint ina chroítheanna.

It was more than just words, a promise within their hearts.

  • Geallúint nach gcaithfidís a bheith uaigneach ina brón, ach go mbeidís ina gcomrádaithe tríd gach rud.

A promise not to be lonely in their sorrow, but to be comrades through everything.

  • D'fhág siad Glendalough ag brath le chéile go muinteartha, a gcroíthe níos teo ón tús.

They left Glendalough depending on each other, with their hearts warmed from the beginning.

  • Bhain siad an neart Sinéad as labhairt na fírinne le chéile, dóibh i gcroí an áilleacht ciúin.

Sinead drew strength from speaking the truth together, in the heart of the silent beauty.

  • Agus sa solas sin den lá, bhí siad athunite sa dóchas, leis an bhféintéarmaí a bhí acu mar threoir nua.

And in that light of the day, they reunited in hope, with their self-commitments as a new guide.

  • Orgánach agus lán de chaoineadh, rith siad go léir amach, ach le dóchas nua sna maidineacha rompu.

Whole and full of crying, they all ran out, but with new hope in the mornings ahead.

  • Bhí athrú tagtha, taismeach, ach fíor.

A change had come, accidental, but true.

  • Is léir go raibh todhchaí a saol beagnach os comhair a chéile.

It was clear that the future of their lives was almost before them.
