Eero glanced hurriedly in front of him as he stepped into the field hospital.
Täällä, telttojen keskellä, oli syksyisiä vaahteranlehtiä pitkin maata, muistuttaen häntä kodin lämpimästä villapaitakokoelmasta.
Here, amidst the tents, autumn maple leaves covered the ground, reminding him of his warm sweater collection at home.
But warmth wasn't on his mind, rather a specific pair of socks.
Those socks had brought him luck in many situations—during exams, soccer matches, and even when he met his dream girl.
But now, they had been left in the wrong place, in the hospital laundry.
Eero katsahti ympärilleen etsien sisäänkäyntiä.
Eero looked around, searching for an entrance.
Oven vieressä seisoi Liisa, sairaalan tarkkasilmäinen ja tarmokas hallintopäällikkö.
Next to the door stood Liisa, the sharp-eyed and energetic administrative manager of the hospital.
Hän tiesi kaiken ja tunsi jokaisen.
She knew everything and everyone.
Eero veti syvään henkeä.
Eero took a deep breath.
He was wearing nurse clothes borrowed from his friend Matti.
Oli vain päästävä sisään ilman kysymyksiä.
He just needed to get inside without any questions.
"Hei!
"Hi!
Päivää," Eero tervehti vakuuttavasti Liisaa.
Good day," Eero greeted Liisa convincingly.
Liisa kurtisti kulmiaan.
Liisa frowned.
"Kuka sinä olet?
"Who are you?
En muista nähneeni sinua täällä ennen."
I don't remember seeing you here before."
Eero oli valmistautunut.
Eero was prepared.
"Voi, minä olen uusi täällä," hän sanoi ja hymyili mahdollisimman aidosti.
"Oh, I am new here," he said, smiling as genuinely as possible.
"Matilta sain tietää, että täällä tarvitaan lisäkäsiä."
"Matti told me that more hands are needed here."
Liisa katsoi häntä hetken, mutta sitten nyökkäsi.
Liisa looked at him for a moment, but then nodded.
"Kädet ovat aina tervetulleita."
"Hands are always welcome."
Eero huuhahti helpotuksesta ja suunnisti pesulan suuntaan.
Eero sighed with relief and headed towards the laundry.
Hänen täytyi löytää ne sukat.
He had to find those socks.
The laundry was full of busy people, but there they were, at the bottom of a laundry cart, peeking out from under other laundry.
Eero leapt toward them, and just as he reached for the socks, he heard Liisa's voice behind him.
"Noh, mikä kiire?"
"Well, what's the rush?"
Liisa kysyi, käsivarret tiukasti ristissä.
Liisa asked, arms tightly crossed.
Eeron sydän hakkasi.
Eero's heart was racing.
"Ah, tiedätkö," hän aloitti, "Nämä sukat... ovat ihan erityiset.
"Ah, you know," he began, "These socks... are quite special.
Meillä on nimittäin teatteriesitys, jossa tarvitaan juuri tällaiset onnenkappaleet."
We have a theater performance where just such lucky pieces are needed."
Liisa hymyili vinosti.
Liisa smiled crookedly.
"Teatteriesitys, vai?
"A theater performance, eh?
No, toivottavasti niistä onnea on."
Well, hopefully they bring luck."
Eero nyökkäsi kiitollisena ja nappasi sukat mukaansa.
Eero nodded gratefully and grabbed the socks with him.
He had learned that sometimes a little imagination and cleverness go a long way.
As he left the hospital, he nodded thankfully at Liisa, who smiled back, knowing full well that Eero wasn't exactly what he appeared to be.
But at the same time, she couldn't help but admire Eero's determination.
Ulkona, syksyn tuuli puhalsi lehtiä ilmaan, ja Eero veti sukat ylleen.
Outside, the autumn wind blew leaves into the air, and Eero slipped on the socks.
Hänellä oli edessään tärkeä haastattelu.
He had an important interview ahead.
Ja nyt, hänen onnensukkansa olivat mukana.
And now, his lucky socks were with him.
