Kaarel knew that Tallinn held many hidden stories.
As he watched the autumn sun play on the cobblestones of the Old Town, he wanted more.
Rohkem kui ainult päevast päeva orbudekodu aia sees olla.
More than just being within the confines of the orphanage's garden day after day.
In the orphanage, run by the caring yet strict Maire, freedom seemed like a dream.
Aga mitte täna, mõtles Kaarel.
But not today, Kaarel thought.
Kaarel was a resourceful boy, full of energy and curiosity.
He knew he had to be smart and cautious to slip past Maire's watchful eyes.
He sat by his room's window and looked out.
It was almost noon, and his internal clock told him it was time to go.
"Plaan on järgmine," sosistas Kaarel, kui Liina huvi tundis.
"The plan is this," whispered Kaarel as Liina showed interest.
Nad istusid pea pead koos, sosistades põnevil, püüdes Maire pealt kuulata.
They sat with their heads together, whispering excitedly, trying to avoid Maire's attention.
"Sa pead Maire tähelepanu kõrvale juhtima."
"You need to distract Maire."
Liina oli alati valmis uute seiklusteks.
Liina was always ready for new adventures.
Ta noogutas innukalt.
She nodded eagerly.
Siis justkui maagilisel hetkel hakkas midagi toimuma.
Then, as if by magic, something started happening.
Liina pani ema kuju vaatamiseks võimelised etendused koolimaja ukse juurde.
Liina staged a spectacle by the school building's door, captivating like a statue of a mother.
Lapsed läksid kohe ligi.
The children immediately gathered around.
"Maire, vaata, mis Liina teeb!"
"Maire, look what Liina is doing!"
hüüdis keegi.
someone shouted.
See oli Kaarelile märguandeks.
This was the signal for Kaarel.
He slipped through the gate, stepped onto the street, and took a deep breath.
Tänavad olid täis elu.
The streets were full of life.
Turistide müra ja vanalinnaga kaasnevad lõhnad.
The noise of tourists and the scents that accompanied the Old Town.
Väikesed kivipoed, päikese käes mängivad tänavamuusikud ja sajandeid vanad majad tekitasid temas kerge ärevuse ja samaaegselt elevuse.
Small stone shops, street musicians playing in the sun, and centuries-old houses gave him a sense of slight anxiety and simultaneous excitement.
Ta liikus inimestega kaasa, tema silmad säramas.
He moved along with the people, his eyes shining.
Kaarel paistis turisti.
Kaarel looked like a tourist.
Aga miski oli ikkagi veider.
But something still felt odd.
Mida rohkem ta vaatas, tundis ta südames kerget kloppi.
The more he looked, the more he felt a slight thump in his heart.
Aeg jõudis peagi pärastlõunasse.
Time soon reached the afternoon.
Shadows lengthened, and the city gradually began to dim.
Kaarel realized that despite the dream of adventuring, his true freedom was within the feeling of home.
Even though the orphanage wasn't quite a family, there were Maire and Liina.
Vanalinna tänavatel seiklemine oli lõppemas.
His adventure on the streets of the Old Town was coming to an end.
Otsustaval hetkel, kui päev hakkas õhtusse vajuma, pöördus Kaarel tagasi.
At the decisive moment, as the day began to fade into evening, Kaarel turned back.
The old orphanage called to him just like every day, but today it was different.
There was a warm feeling, friends waiting, and even Maire, who worried and cared.
When Kaarel returned, he saw Liina's little smile, full of joy and approval.
Maire ootas teda uksel, kergelt kulmu kortsutades, kuid leevendus silmis.
Maire waited for him at the door, frowning slightly, but with relief in her eyes.
"Mul oli seiklus," ütles Kaarel vaikselt.
"I had an adventure," said Kaarel quietly.
He knew he didn't have to explain everything he experienced.
"Aga olen tänulik, et võin siia tagasi tulla."
"But I'm grateful I can come back here."
Maire noogutas.
Maire nodded.
Liina naeris.
Liina laughed.
And Kaarel knew deep in his heart that even though the orphanage wasn't what any boy might wish for, it was still a home for those who expressed true connections and care there.
