Maarja pulled the hood tightly around her face and took a deep breath.
The tundra was an endless white platform that spread out before her eyes.
Jää ja lumi sulasid päikesekiirtes, tehes maapinna siin-seal libedaks.
Ice and snow melted in the sunlight, making the ground slippery here and there.
Kevadine külm oli siiski halastamatu, karedad tuuleiilid närisid iga paljastatud nahka.
The spring cold was nonetheless relentless, the rough gusts of wind gnawing at any exposed skin.
"Me peame edasi liikuma," ütles Kalju, Maarja onu, kes seisis tema kõrval.
"We have to keep moving," said Kalju, Maarja's uncle, who stood beside her.
Ta silmad olid murest tumedad.
His eyes were dark with worry.
"Lauri ei suuda kaua vastu pidada."
"Lauri won't be able to hold out for long."
Maarja looked at her younger brother, whose face was red and whose lips had turned bluish.
Lauri was shivering violently, despite being wrapped in warm blankets.
He had developed severe frostbite, and they needed help.
"Walpurgi ööl peaks olema rõõmus ja lõbus, aga mitte siin," ohkas Maarja vaikselt.
"Walpurgi night should be joyful and fun, but not here," sighed Maarja quietly.
Otsusekindlus Maarjas tugevnes.
Determination in Maarja grew stronger.
She knew that their survival now depended on her.
"Ma lähen," ütles Maarja kindlalt.
"I will go," said Maarja firmly.
"Ma leian ilmavaatlusjaama ja toon abi."
"I will find the weather station and bring help."
Kalju looked at Maarja, his gaze reflecting pride and doubt.
"See on ohtlik, Maarja."
"It's dangerous, Maarja."
"Aga vajalik," vastas Maarja viivituseta.
"But necessary," replied Maarja without hesitation.
After a quick farewell with her loved ones, Maarja left the camp behind and began to move.
The wind danced fiercely around her, but she did not stop.
Every step seemed like eternity, but she did not let herself be discouraged.
Ta teadis, et Lauri elu sõltub temast.
She knew that Lauri's life depended on her.
Tundide möödudes kippus väsimus Maarjat vaevama.
As hours passed, fatigue began to plague Maarja.
Her legs grew heavy and the cold penetrated more tenderly into her body with every step.
Finally, just when it seemed that the storm would take the last of her strength, the silhouette of a building appeared on the horizon - the weather station.
Her heart raced and Maarja knew she had nearly reached her goal.
Jaam oli pelgupaik, kus saaks abi kutsuda.
The station was a refuge where help could be called.
Maarja jõudis jaamani vaevalt enne kui torm jõudis täies jõus.
Maarja reached the station barely before the storm arrived in full force.
Jaamamehed võtsid Meerja vastu ja korraldasid kohe päästetööd.
The station men received Maarja and immediately organized rescue operations.
Nad väljastasid SOS-signaale ning organiseerisid Lauri haiguse jaoks vajaliku abivajaduse.
They sent out SOS signals and arranged the necessary assistance for Lauri's illness.
Maarja could do nothing but observe the progress with satisfaction, her fatigue turning into contentment.
Päästemeeskond jõudis Maarja laagri juurde kiirelt ja toimetas Kalju ja Lauri turvaliselt jaama.
The rescue team quickly reached Maarja's camp and safely transported Kalju and Lauri to the station.
Lauri sai arstiabi ja hakkas taastuma.
Lauri received medical care and began to recover.
Maarja seisis väljaspool jaama, vaadates kaugusesse.
Maarja stood outside the station, gazing into the distance.
Tema südames oli rahu.
Her heart was at peace.
She had done everything she could, and more.
Kalju astus tema juurde, pannes käe tema õlale.
Kalju stepped beside her, placing a hand on her shoulder.
"Sa oled tõeline maadeavastaja, Maarja," ütles Kalju pehmelt.
"You are a true explorer, Maarja," said Kalju softly.
"Sinu julgeks tegu päästis meie kõigi elud."
"Your brave deed saved all our lives."
Maarja naeratas, tundes, kuidas päikesevalgus valgustab jääkihtidesse mähitud maapinda.
Maarja smiled, feeling the sunlight illuminating the ice-laden ground.
Kuigi sellel Walpurgi ööl polnud lõkkeid ega tantse, oli Maarja saavutanud midagi palju väärtuslikumat.
Although there were no bonfires or dances on this Walpurgi night, Maarja had achieved something much more valuable.
She had found her strength and earned Kalju's respect.
Ja see oli midagi, mida iga vapper rändur soovis saavutada.
And that was something every brave wanderer wished to achieve.
