The feria del libro in Buenos Aires was a sea of people and multicolored books.
Mateo, a twelve-year-old boy with bright and curious eyes, looked around in amazement.
Lucía, his ten-year-old sister, tugged at their mother Inés's hand, enthusiastically pointing towards the comics section.
I want to see the superhero comics!" Lucía said with a grin from ear to ear.
"Alright, Lucía, but don't let go of my hand," replied Inés, already taking out her phone to attend to a work message.
Mateo tenía otro objetivo en mente.
Mateo had a different goal in mind.
His favorite author was signing books and Mateo dreamed of becoming a writer one day.
He wanted to ask the author for advice, but the crowd made everything complicated.
Inés was trying to keep her two children safe while also focusing on her work.
—Mamá, ¿puedo ir a ver al autor?— preguntó Mateo, mirando esperanzado.
"Mamá, can I go see the author?" Mateo asked, looking hopeful.
"Mateo, there's a lot of people. We'll go together later," said Inés, while answering an important call.
But Mateo, determined, saw how the distance to the author's booth became smaller if he dared to move alone through the throng.
With a surge of determination, he slipped between the adults, leaving his mother and sister behind.
The fair was a maze of laughter, voices, and the scent of new books.
Mateo made his way through, his heart racing, until he finally saw the author, sitting behind a table.
However, before he could reach him, a security guard with a serious expression blocked his path.
"Kid, you can’t be here alone," the guard said, with a sympathetic yet firm look.
Mateo felt a lump in his throat as he realized he had separated from his family.
From behind, a familiar voice shouted his name.
—¡Mateo! Me preocupaste.
"Mateo!" It was Inés, running towards him, with Lucía in tow. "Don't ever do that again, darling. You worried me."
The guard, seeing the concern in the mother's eyes, decided to help them.
"The author is kind, maybe you can talk to him for a moment," he suggested with a smile.
Mateo got to have that brief encounter with his literary hero.
The author signed his book and offered a few words of encouragement about following his writing dreams.
Mateo sonreía de oreja a oreja, lleno de inspiración.
Mateo smiled from ear to ear, filled with inspiration.
Back with his family, Mateo understood how much his mother did for them, even amid the chaos of the fair.
He promised himself not to wander off like that again.
He learned that being together was the most important thing.
And so, with the soft sound of pages turning and voices at the fair, Mateo found his love for storytelling and a new respect for his mother, all at the same time.
The fair was more than just a place with books; it became the stage for a valuable lesson about dreams and family.
