Mateo walked slowly through la Plaza de Mayo, his steps echoing on the cold cobblestones of the porteño winter.
The plaza was full of people, each face like an echo of the history resonating in that place.
La Casa Rosada stood majestically in front, a silent witness to protests and hopes.
Mateo observed the excited faces around him.
His family was there, remembering the abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, who had marched decades ago for their children who disappeared during the dictatorship.
Although he had heard it many times, he didn't fully understand the significance of those acts.
"Sofía," Mateo called to his aunt, "tell me again about grandma."
Sofía, a woman of medium height with warm eyes, looked at him with a smile.
"Tu abuela era valiente.
"Your grandmother was brave.
She never stopped seeking justice," she explained as they approached a group holding old photos.
"She believed in a better future for everyone."
Carlos, Mateo's brother, continued the story.
"Era difícil, Mateo.
"It was difficult, Mateo.
But thanks to them, the world knew what happened here.
No podemos olvidar."
We cannot forget."
Mateo nodded, although doubt persisted inside him.
¿Realmente estos actos podían cambiar algo?
Could these acts really change anything?
He felt the pressure to understand and participate, being part of a history that felt foreign.
In the center of the plaza, a small makeshift stage was set up.
The voices quieted when a woman began to speak into the microphone.
"Hoy recordamos a las valientes abuelas," dijo emocionada.
"Today we remember the brave grandmothers," she said emotionally.
"Y tenemos algo especial.
"And we have something special.
Una carta de una de ellas."
A letter from one of them."
Mateo sintió el corazón latir con fuerza.
Mateo felt his heart pound forcefully.
"It’s from your grandmother," Sofía murmured, handing him the yellow envelope.
With trembling hands, Mateo opened it and began to read.
The handwriting was firm, the words filled with hope and sadness.
"Dear Mateo," his grandmother wrote, "never forget what we fought to achieve.
Love and justice are seeds we must plant in every heart.
No podemos rendirnos."
We cannot give up."
Al terminar, Mateo alzó la vista.
Upon finishing, Mateo looked up.
A solemn silence spread among the crowd.
He carefully closed the envelope and put it in his pocket, feeling a new warmth in his chest.
At that moment, amidst the cold air and the echo of memories, Mateo understood.
He comprehended the importance of remembering, of fighting for a better future, and felt the weight but also the pride of his family legacy.
As the crowd began to disperse, Mateo made a commitment within himself: he would carry forward his grandmother's message.
He looked back at the imposing Casa Rosada, with renewed determination.
Now he knew that every small action counted, and that he was part of something much bigger than he could have imagined.
Mateo se sentía, finalmente, conectado.
Mateo felt, finally, connected.
