Lucía walked back and forth along the cold corridor of the hospital in Buenos Aires.
Autumn was painting the leaves of the trees in warm colors, and they danced in the wind outside, visible through the large windows.
However, inside the hospital, the atmosphere was different.
Todo era blanco, serio.
Everything was white, serious.
You could feel a mix of disinfectant and worry in the air.
Lucía estaba allí por su hermano, Mateo.
Lucía was there for her brother, Mateo.
An accident on his motorcycle had left him in critical condition.
Lucía era la hermana mayor, siempre responsable.
Lucía was the older sister, always responsible.
Her whole life she had cared for her family, and now she felt like her entire world was hanging by a thread.
Junto a ella estaba Elena, su mejor amiga.
Beside her was Elena, her best friend.
Elena tried to console her, but Lucía could only think about Mateo.
The doctors were coming in and out of the operating room.
Every time a door opened, Lucía's heart stopped for a second.
“Everything is going to be okay,” said Elena softly, squeezing Lucía's hand.
Pero Lucía no podía escuchar esos dulces consuelos.
But Lucía couldn't hear those sweet reassurances.
She clung to hope and at the same time fought against the fear of losing Mateo.
Finalmente, el doctor salió.
Finally, the doctor came out.
He wore a mask that only allowed his tired eyes to be seen.
Lucía took a step toward him, waiting anxiously but feeling panic in her chest.
"Lucía," the doctor began, "Mateo is stable, but his condition remains critical.
Necesitará tiempo y atención."
He will need time and care."
Those words were a breath of relief, a spark of hope.
Lucía closed her eyes for a moment, allowing a tear to run down her cheek.
She didn't know how much longer she would have to wait, but something inside her changed.
In those moments of uncertainty, Lucía understood that she couldn't control everything.
But she realized she was willing to do everything possible to see her brother healthy.
She needed to be strong, not just for herself, but for Mateo and her family.
She looked at Elena, who gave her a warm hug.
"We have to be strong, Lucía," Elena whispered to her.
Lucía asintió, ahora con una nueva determinación.
Lucía nodded, now with a new determination.
With autumn advancing outside, Lucía found a new strength within herself.
She learned to accept uncertainty and face the abyss with courage.
No matter what happened, she would be the pillar for her family, as she always had been.
