  • V podzimním oparu, když se barevné listí lesklo v odlescích tlumeného slunce, se orphanatum Opatrov schovávalo pod stíny starých stromů.

In the autumn fog, when the colorful leaves glistened in the reflections of the muted sun, the orphanage Opatrov lay hidden under the shadows of ancient trees.

  • Jakub, malý hoch s očima plnýma fantazie, pospíchal po chodbě.

Jakub, a small boy with eyes full of imagination, hurried down the hallway.

  • Nespěchal k jídlu ani ke hře, ale k tajnému koutu pod schodištěm, kde měl všechny své poklady.

He wasn't rushing to eat or play, but to a secret corner under the staircase where he kept all his treasures.

  • Jakub měl plán.

    Jakub had a plan.

  • Blížil se Halloween a i když se v orphanatu přísně hlídalo zdraví kvůli virovému propuknutí, chtěl přinést trochu radosti.

Halloween was approaching, and even though the orphanage was strictly monitoring health due to a viral outbreak, he wanted to bring some joy.

  • Bohužel, Ludmila, jedna z vychovatelek, měla plné ruce práce s péčí o nemocné děti.

Unfortunately, Ludmila, one of the caregivers, had her hands full taking care of the sick children.

She looked tired but still tried to gift everyone with a smile.

  • Jednou, když Jakub dokončoval papírovou strašidelnou masku, potkal Karla.

One day, as Jakub was finishing a paper ghost mask, he met Karel.

Karel was new and quiet, but he had sharp eyes that noticed everything.

  • Jakub k němu přichvátal s nápadem.

Jakub approached him with an idea.

  • "Pomůžeš mi s výzdobou?"

"Will you help me with the decorations?"

  • zeptal se nadšeně.

    he asked enthusiastically.

Karel paused to think but then nodded.

  • Společně začali sbírat barvité listí a vyřezávat dýně z papíru.

Together, they began collecting colorful leaves and carving pumpkins out of paper.

Every evening after dinner, they stole a moment to create in the colors of autumn.

Jakub believed that Halloween, even a small one, could bring a bit of joy to the children.

  • Museli být opatrní, protože Ludmila nechtěla žádná velká setkání.

They had to be careful because Ludmila didn't want any large gatherings.

But Jakub's plan was quiet, unobtrusive, and Karel was a great ally.

  • Konečně přišel ten den.

    Finally, the day came.

  • Halloween.

    Halloween.

The children were supposed to be asleep, but it was hard for any of them to sleep when the faint sound of festive music echoed in the evening.

  • Jakub dal znamení, a Karel, rozpačitý ale nadšený, pomohl rozvěsit všechny masky a girlandy.

Jakub gave a signal, and Karel, awkward but excited, helped hang all the masks and garlands.

The children began to gather, their faces lit up with joy.

  • Ludmila, která kontrolovala pokoje, vstoupila do haly.

Ludmila, who was checking the rooms, entered the hall.

At first, she wanted to protest, but when she saw the children laughing and swaying at the improvised Halloween festivity, her face changed.

  • "Jakube," oslovila ho jemně, "tohle je nečekané..." Jakub jen pokrčil rameny.

"Jakub," she addressed him gently, "this is unexpected..." Jakub just shrugged.

  • "Chtěli jsme jen trochu radosti," odpověděl lehce udýchaně.

"We just wanted a bit of joy," he replied, slightly breathless.

  • Ludmila se mírně usmála a pokývla.

    Ludmila smiled slightly and nodded.

  • "Je to krásné.

    "It's beautiful.

  • Ale příště s větší opatrností.

But next time, be more cautious.

  • Malé radosti jsou také důležité."

    Little joys are important too."

Jakub finally felt part of something bigger.

  • Karel stál tiše vedle něj, konečně zapojený, nebyl už zcela uzavřený do svého světa.

Karel stood quietly next to him, finally involved, no longer entirely closed off in his own world.

In that old building, among the shadows and laughter, the children found a moment of peaceful refuge, bringing them closer to each other and to those who cared for them.

And so, even though it was just a small Halloween, that autumn became unforgettable— a time when friendship was born from paper masks and daring ideas.
