The scent of fresh rain hangs heavily over the Karoo-farm.
It is the first spring rain, and the farm stretches wide and open, soft pink and green after the winter's drought.
The sky is clear, and the earth feels as if it is taking a deep breath.
In the old farmhouse, Thabo sits and stares at the field.
The house is cozy and full of memories, with its wooden floors creaking under every footstep.
Thabo, with his strong traditional values and love for the land, walks slowly to the kitchen where he sees Annelise making a cup of coffee.
She is full of energy, her hair shiny from the rain, her eyes sharp and full of curiosity.
"Hoe was die stad?
"How was the city?"
" vra Thabo, sy stem gedemp maar nuuskierig.
asks Thabo, his voice subdued but curious.
"Besig," antwoord Annelise en voeg by, "maar opwindend.
"Busy," answers Annelise, adding, "but exciting."
Thabo nods, half-glowing with hope that he can keep her here, on the farm, where she originally comes from.
He keeps his plans in his pocket but hesitates.
Hy moet haar wys hoekom hy dink sy moet bly.
He needs to show her why he thinks she should stay.
"I've started making changes to the farm," he says suddenly.
"Ek wil jou wys.
"I want to show you."
Annelise looks up, a flash of interest in her eyes.
"Vooruit, wys my dan.
"Go ahead, show me then."
Outside, he shows her the dam, now full from the rain, and explains the plans he has to use solar panels and how water efficiency can be improved.
This is the first step to using modern techniques to make the farm sustainable.
She looks at him, half-skeptically but also genuinely curious.
The thunder grumbles in the distance, and the sky begins to threaten rain again.
Lightning flashes over the Karoo as Thabo leads her to a table on which his plans are laid out.
"Here," he says, his voice now full of energy, "here's what I think we can do.
Saam.
Together."
In the flashes of light, she sees the unyielding will of a man set in his ways, but one who is beginning to open up to something new.
The lightning illuminates the environment just enough for her to see the sparkle in his eyes.
She has learned to use modern techniques in urban areas and can't help but wonder what possibilities await here on the farm if the old and new join hands.
With the storm above them, she makes a decision.
"I will stay for the spring," she finally says, her voice calm and full of resolve.
"I want to see how far we can go."
They both smile in the dark, wet rain that slowly begins to stop.
Thabo feels the tension fall from his shoulders, a step closer to the future he dreams of for the farm.
Annelise feels the lost shame of her turmoil in the city make way for something both new and familiar.
Spring is a season of new beginnings, and for Thabo and Annelise, the Karoo has just offered an opportunity to blend the old and the new, to preserve family traditions, and to be innovative.
And thus begins their journey, together, under the wide open skies of the Cape Karoo.
