Die wêreld het verander.
The world has changed.
Within the deserted walls of a building that was once a bustling market, Thandi walks slowly between the stalls.
It is spring, but the air does not carry the scent of fresh flowers.
Dis vol van stof en spanning.
It's filled with dust and tension.
All around her are people, but their faces are somber.
The remnants of old skyscrapers stare down, reminders of what has been lost.
Thandi looks back at Kobus, who is talking to another trader.
He wears a torn jacket, his hair tousled by the wind.
Kobus is known for his trading skills, but Thandi can see the longing in his eyes.
Kobus wil meer hê as net oorlewing; hy verlang na gemeenskap.
Kobus wants more than just survival; he yearns for community.
"What are you looking for, Thandi?" asks Elna, who is looking after the children.
"Ek het sade nodig," antwoord Thandi.
"I need seeds," replies Thandi.
"Ons moet 'n tuin begin.
"We need to start a garden.
We need to stop just trading and start growing."
Elna glimlag teer.
Elna smiles tenderly.
"Dit sal die kinders hoop gee."
"It will give the children hope."
Thandi ventures to a stall where a bag of seeds lies.
The trader looks up, his eyes narrow and shrewd.
"Interessante keuse," sê hy.
"Interesting choice," he says.
"Veelsogte saad vandag."
"Much sought-after seed today."
Thandi haal die erfstuk uit haar sak.
Thandi takes the heirloom out of her pocket.
Dis 'n broche met 'n helder steen.
It’s a brooch with a bright stone.
Haar ma het dit vir haar gegee.
Her mother gave it to her.
She hesitates, feeling the weight of generations in her hand.
"Ek kan dit ruil," bied sy aan.
"I can trade this," she offers.
Before the trader can respond, the other group appears - the Mededinger Groep.
Hulle is sterk, hard, en bied meer as net 'n prysbare voorwerp.
They are strong, tough, and offer more than just a valuable object.
Die handelaar se oë blink.
The trader’s eyes gleam.
"Ek kan hulle aanbod nie ignoreer nie."
"I cannot ignore their offer."
Thandi voel moedeloos.
Thandi feels disheartened.
Dan trek Kobus nader.
Then Kobus steps closer.
"Wat as ons saamwerk?" vra hy.
"What if we work together?" he asks.
"Ek het kontak.
"I have contacts.
Elna and the children are also a reason to offer more."
Thandi dink aan hul klein gemeenskap.
Thandi thinks of their small community.
Hulle het so hard probeer oorleef.
They have tried so hard to survive.
Dalk is 'n alliansie die beste opsie.
Perhaps an alliance is the best option.
Sy kyk Kobus in die oë.
She looks Kobus in the eyes.
"Goed.
"Alright.
Saam."
Together."
The trader looks at the new offer: Kobus's skills, Thandi's heirloom, Elna's hope.
Hy knik.
He nods.
"Aanvaar."
"Accepted."
With the seeds and gardening tools in hand, they return to their group.
Thandi voel iets nuuts - 'n sekere krag.
Thandi feels something new - a certain strength.
She now knows that she doesn’t have to be alone.
Later, while they work the soil, she sees how the children laugh and chat.
Hoop bloei stadig in die lentegrond.
Hope slowly blooms in the spring soil.
Thandi turns to Kobus, who is working with Elna.
"Thank you," she says, and knows that the future, though uncertain, is a bit brighter now with them by her side.
