In the bright and cold winter sunlight streaming through the large windows of the high school's science laboratory, Jannie stands with a mixture of excitement and nervousness.
The tables in front of him are full of test tubes, flasks, and various experimental equipment.
Jannie bends over his newly-made rocket, an old soda bottle with carelessly made cardboard wings.
Thandi and Pieter, his classmates, sit across the table, curious about Jannie's plan.
"Ek gaan 'n raket lanseer," sê Jannie met groot selfvertroue.
"I'm going to launch a rocket," Jannie says with great confidence.
"Dit gaan indrukwekkend wees.
"It's going to be impressive."
Thandi tugs at her hair and whispers, "Did you check all the safety rules?"
Jannie nods, but she knows him better—she knows that he often overlooks certain steps.
In the corner of the room, Meneer Botha, the science teacher, looks skeptically at Jannie's preparation.
The smell of vinegar hangs thick in the air, evidence of Jannie's mixtures.
Jannie decides to add a little extra baking soda to the bottle for a bigger reaction.
"Dit sal skouspelagtig wees," fluister hy vir homself, al was daar twyfel in sy stem.
"It will be spectacular," he whispers to himself, though there was doubt in his voice.
With his heart pounding in his chest, Jannie places the stopper on the bottle and jiggles it in his hands.
The pressure begins to build, and suddenly, with a loud "poof!
", skiet die bottel die lug in.
", the bottle shoots into the air.
It flies through the air, narrowly missing Meneer Botha's head, who simultaneously ducks to work on a test tube.
Die klaskamer versink in chaos.
The classroom descends into chaos.
Thandi giggel en Pieter staan verstom.
Thandi giggles and Pieter stands astonished.
The rocket hits the ceiling and falls harmlessly back to the ground.
Jannie sees the slightly shocked but amused face of Meneer Botha and knows he has learned a lesson.
"Jannie," says Meneer Botha firmly, but with a smile.
"Ek bewonder jou ywer, maar veiligheid moet altyd eerste kom.
"I admire your enthusiasm, but safety must always come first."
" Die klas lag, en die spanning breek.
The class laughs, and the tension breaks.
Jannie antwoord met 'n skaam glimlag: "Ek is jammer, Meneer.
Jannie responds with a sheepish smile: "I'm sorry, sir.
Ek sal dit volgende keer beter beplan.
I'll plan better next time."
At that moment, Jannie understands the importance of safety and preparation.
He now knows that experiments are not just about the end result, but about the processes, care, and respect for the procedures.
The day ends with a calm silence in the classroom, the winter sunlight illuminating the scene of the mishap and the joy of young scientists learning and growing in their discoveries.
