The morning sun cast a pale light over the Kirstenbosch Botaniese Tuin.
Winter had covered the earth, but a vague promise of spring hung in the air.
Spring plants slowly began to push their heads through the cold ground.
The fresh, wet smell filled the garden along with the soft murmur of people.
Liesl walked slowly along the pathways, her eyes on the beautiful variety of green around her.
She felt the familiar silence in her heart, a mix of peace and loneliness.
She longed for plants to give her garden life and perhaps her spirit too.
Beside her walked Ruben, her cousin who had just returned from Australia.
His eyes moved with wonder over the familiar landscape, grateful for the return to his roots.
"Look here, Liesl," said Ruben, pointing to a cluster of bright yellow daffodils.
Agter hulle is Anika, Liesl se lojale vriendin.
Behind them was Anika, Liesl's loyal friend.
Anika knew the depths of Liesl's silences and always tried to make her a part of the world outside her garden.
"Dis pragtig, Ruben," sê Anika.
"It's beautiful, Ruben," said Anika.
"Liesl, dink jy nie hierdie blomme sal jou tuin verhelder nie?"
"Liesl, don't you think these flowers would brighten your garden?"
Liesl glimlag flou.
Liesl smiled faintly.
"Ja, hulle sal," antwoord sy.
"Yes, they would," she answered.
Maar insluitend ander in haar denke oor blomme was moeilik.
But including others in her thoughts about flowers was difficult.
Inside, she felt alone, even though she was surrounded by people who cared.
"If we plant together, we can bring this place to life from the ground up," said Ruben.
"Dalk 'n idee vir 'n tuinklubbottom."
"Maybe an idea for a garden club."
Die idee het iets in Liesl geroer.
The idea stirred something in Liesl.
Her love for plants had always flourished alone, but maybe... maybe she could open up to another.
"Ja," sê sy, haar stem effens skuddend.
"Yes," she said, her voice slightly shaking.
"Dit kan werk."
"It could work."
In the silence of the garden, her words broke into the ground like a sturdy root.
She took a deep breath, open to the possibility of growth.
It was the beginning of something new, a place where plants and hearts flourished together.
And there, in that garden, Liesl made a decision: to share her passion with others and, perhaps, fill her life with true connection.
The garden, like her heart, would no longer be alone.
