The cold winter breeze blows over the slopes of Tafelberg.

Marelize and Jacobus walk slowly along the winding path.

  • Die fynbos ruik vars in die oggendlig.

The fynbos smells fresh in the morning light.

They are there to remember their mother.

  • Sy het altyd van hierdie berg gehou.

She had always loved this mountain.

  • Marelize voel stil.

    Marelize feels quiet.

Her heart is heavy with thoughts of their mother.

  • Jacobus stap voor haar uit.

    Jacobus walks ahead of her.

His boots make soft sounds on the piles of rocks.

"Do you remember, Marelize, how Mom always had her favorite spot to rest just above the waterfall?"

  • "Ja," antwoord Marelize, haar stem sag.

"Yes," answers Marelize, her voice soft.

She longs for those days, days of laughter and stories.

  • Haar ma was haar gids en haar steunpilaar.

Her mother was her guide and her pillar of strength.

Jacobus stops and looks back at his sister.

  • "Jy lyk treurig, Marelize. Is alles reg?"

"You look sad, Marelize. Is everything okay?"

  • "Ek weet nie," sê sy, effens huiwerig.

"I don't know," she says, slightly hesitant.

  • "Ek voel net... ver van haar af.

"I just feel... far from her.

It's hard to still feel her when she's no longer here."

  • Jacobus skud sy kop en glimlag.

Jacobus shakes his head and smiles.

"She's here with us, in nature, the wind, the air.

  • Maar ek verstaan, dis anders."

    But I understand, it's different."

They walk further, the blue sky above them and the city growing smaller beneath their feet.

Marelize feels a bit relieved as she looks up the mountain.

  • "Ek wens ek kon haar weer hoor lag, weet jy?"

"I wish I could hear her laugh again, you know?"

  • "Jy is nie alleen nie, Marelize.

    "You're not alone, Marelize.

I miss it too," says Jacobus with a soft laugh in his voice.

  • Hulle bereik die piek.

    They reach the peak.

  • Die asemrowende uitsig strek oor die hele Kaap.

The breathtaking view stretches over the entire Kaap.

The sun's rays make the morning's cold softer.

Marelize sighs deeply, and then, unexpectedly, she begins to talk about a story their mother always told.

It was a tale full of adventure and love for nature.

Jacobus laughs, teasingly, recalling their mother's dramatic way of storytelling.

They sit there, surrounded by the silent nature.

  • Trane van herinnering vloei saam met lag.

Tears of memory flow along with laughter.

  • "Jy onthou goed," sê Jacobus.

    "You remember well," says Jacobus.

  • Marelize voel 'n warmte in haar bors.

Marelize feels a warmth in her chest.

  • Sy kyk na Jacobus.

    She looks at Jacobus.

"Thank you for being here with me," she says with a smile.

"I think now I understand... we don't have to be sad alone."

They decide to stay up there a while longer, in calm and shared memories.

Marelize feels a new bond with her brother and her mother.

The cold mountain winds feel like an embrace, one that binds her closer to her family.

  • In daardie oomblik besef Marelize iets belangriks.

In that moment, Marelize realizes something important.

By sharing her feelings, she finds not only comfort but also the bond she thought she had lost.

She named her mother so, in the peace on the mountain, and in the love of her brother.
