The sun had not yet stretched its rays over the South African countryside when Johann was already sitting in the kitchen.
He looked through the window at the white frost covering the fields.
Die koue byt deur sy dik jas.
The cold bit through his thick coat.
The farm lay still and peaceful, but his mind was restless.
The winter was harsh, and Johann felt the burden of his duties.
Na sy ernstige asma-aanval, voel hy broos.
After his severe asthma attack, he felt fragile.
Elsabe sat quietly at the table and looked at Johann.
She knew he bore heavy responsibilities.
"Johann," sê sy sag.
"Johann," she said softly.
"We can help; you don't have to do everything alone."
Frederik walked through the door with a sack of feed over his shoulder.
"Dis reg, Oom Johann.
"That's right, Uncle Johann.
Ek's hier om te help," voeg hy by.
I'm here to help," he added.
Johann smiled gratefully, but inside, he felt the struggle between pride and reality.
Hulle stap saam na buite.
They walked outside together.
The cold air filled Johann's lungs, and he coughed intermittently.
The farms stretched out, the fields patiently awaited the spring.
Johann knew he had to be prepared, but his strength was limited.
"Begin julle by die hoenderhok," sê Johann.
"Start at the chicken coop," said Johann.
"Ek loop gou die veld inspekteer.
"I'll go inspect the field quickly."
"Die koue byt sy gesig.
The cold bit his face.
Sy stappe is stadig en swaar.
His steps were slow and heavy.
Die ryp kraak onder sy skoene.
The frost cracked under his shoes.
Johann wil sterk wees, wil wys hy kan steeds die plaas bestuur soos altyd.
Johann wanted to be strong, wanted to show he could still manage the farm as always.
But by the time he reached the edge of the field, he felt breathless.
'n Hardnekkige benoudheid pak hom beet.
A persistent tightness seized him.
Hy sak op sy knieë in die nat gras.
He sank to his knees in the wet grass.
The fresh winter air suddenly felt heavy in his chest.
Hy wil verder, maar sy liggaam protesteer.
He wanted to go further, but his body protested.
The isolated silence of the countryside enveloped him.
He knew he could no longer pretend.
Frederik loop vinnig nader, gevolg deur Elsabe.
Frederik walked quickly closer, followed by Elsabe.
"Uncle Johann, come, come sit," Frederik helped him up with a firm grip.
"Ons sal die res doen.
"We'll do the rest.
Jy moet rus.
You need to rest."
"Elsabe kniel langs hom.
Elsabe knelt beside him.
"Dit maak jou nie minder 'n man as jy hulp aanvaar nie.
"It doesn't make you any less of a man to accept help."
There under the calm sky, surrounded by the vastness of their shared land, Johann decided: he had to accept change.
Die plaas kan net so goed funksioneer as hy leer om ondersteuning te omarm.
The farm could function just as well if he learned to embrace support.
He slowly stood up, with the arms of his two helpers around him.
"Dankie," fluister hy.
"Thank you," he whispered.
Thank you for showing him - vulnerability did not lie in the way of other people's help but in the refusal of it.
With a new determination, Johann walked slowly back to the farmhouse with Elsabe and Frederik.
He was no longer alone, and the farm's future suddenly seemed brighter.
Despite the stark winter landscape, he had discovered a warmth within.
