The winter wind howls through the broken windows of the old school.

The walls are covered with faded murals, a silent reminder of a happier time.

  • Die saal, nou 'n skewebou vol rommel, is vol kinders wat daar skuiling neem.

The hall, now a dilapidated building full of rubble, is filled with children seeking shelter there.

Among them are Andries and his sister, Leandie.

  • Andries kyk om hom rond.

    Andries looks around.

  • Hy is 16 en altyd op sy hoede.

He is 16 and always on guard.

The world is now filled with dangers, but this school, as remote as it is, offers at least a little protection – even if only for a while.

  • "Leandie, ons moet eers hier bly.

"Leandie, we must stay here for now.

Maybe we can still learn something," he whispers.

He knows how important it is to have a little hope, even in a world like this.

Leandie is just 12, but her eyes shine with vitality.

  • "Ek wil meer weet, Andries.

"I want to know more, Andries.

I want to learn why things went this way," she replies with a hint of adventure.

She strokes the old, dusty books on the floor.

Each page is a window to the past.

The school, however, is on the edge of hostile territory.

It is not long before they are confronted by a rival group.

And there, in the cold, Andries must make a decision.

They are not here to make war, but the other group likes to make their mark.

With his heart beating faster, Andries looks at his sister.

He knows that this place, so full of memories and longing, cannot keep them safe.

  • “Leandie, ons moet gaan.

    “Leandie, we must go.

Now,” he says decisively and pulls her closer to him.

  • Die pad na buite is gevaarlik.

    The road outside is dangerous.

  • Die sneeu kraak onder hulle voete.

The snow crunches under their feet.

But a sense of freedom and a glimmering hope drive them forward.

As they leave, Andries knows that they are moving away from danger, but also from the familiar.

But his decision is made – they must survive and continue to dream of a better tomorrow.

Andries realizes that to survive not only means to safely escape but also to believe in a future, a future not just filled with memories but also with new beginnings and hope.

And so they walk, with the cold wind at their back and the unknown before them, still hand in hand.
