The cold Kaapse winter wind howls through the streets.
Pieter en Elsa bly in 'n beskeie huis in 'n stil buurt van Kaapstad.
Pieter and Elsa live in a modest house in a quiet neighborhood of Kaapstad.
The clouds are heavy and threatening, like the somber mood in their home.
The air occasionally smells of sea salt, bringing back memories of better times together.
After the loss of his wife, Pieter has tried to stay strong.
He knows he must make life pleasant for Elsa.
Maar hyself veg ook met sy hartseer.
But he himself is also battling with his grief.
Elsa, with her bright hair and big eyes, seldom looks up at her father.
She too carries the weight of loss on her shoulders.
She longs to laugh with Pieter again and simply feel normal.
That afternoon, as the sun casts its pale rays through the window, Pieter sits and thinks deeply.
Hy besef hulle moet praat, oor hul verlies, oor hoe dinge moet aangaan.
He realizes they need to talk about their loss, about how things should move forward.
He decides to arrange a small meal—just him and Elsa.
That evening, with the fighting aroma of braaivleis swirling through the air, they sit at the table.
Elsa voel ongemaklik maar bly.
Elsa feels uncomfortable but happy.
She hadn't thought her father would attempt something like this.
They begin the meal in silence, the crack of Elsa's chopsticks creating a rhythm on the plate.
Dan, skielik, breek Pieter die stilte.
Then, suddenly, Pieter breaks the silence.
"Ek mis haar elke dag," sê hy, sy oë blink.
"I miss her every day," he says, his eyes shining.
Elsa kyk op, haar hart klop vinniger.
Elsa looks up, her heart beating faster.
"Ek ook, Pa," fluister sy.
"Me too, Dad," she whispers.
The words flow over them like a flood.
Pieter tells stories of when he and his wife were young lovers.
Elsa shares the little memories her mom taught her just the previous winter to a theater song.
They laugh and cry together, like scenes from a movie.
All this time, they had pretended that everything could stay unsaid, but now these walls were broken down.
By the end of the meal, the room feels warmer, the bonds stronger.
"We are not alone," says Pieter, stretching his hand across the table.
Elsa plaas haar hand in syne, 'n klein glimlag op haar gesig.
Elsa places her hand on his, a slight smile on her face.
“Ek is bly ons het gepraat, Pa.”
"I'm glad we talked, Dad."
That night they go to sleep with a new sense of peace, knowing they don't have to carry this loss alone in this winter.
In the quiet street outside, the wind still howls, but inside the house, something has changed.
They have found each other and with that, a new beginning.
