The sounds of footsteps and murmurs fill the halls of the Kaapstad Central Police Station.

It is winter, and the cold outside makes people move faster, hoping to find warmth inside.

  • Elsa stap versigtig binne, haar gesig effens gekreukel van ongemak.

Elsa steps cautiously inside, her face slightly wrinkled with discomfort.

She feels an itch spreading over her arms, a feeling she knows all too well.

Elsa is here to report a theft.

Someone stole her purse at the market.

But before she can reach the counter, she feels her throat starting to tighten.

She's allergic to something, but she doesn't know what triggered it this time.

The itch worsens, and she struggles to breathe.

On the other side of the elevator, sits Gerrit, a police captain who feels overwhelmed.

His desk is littered with files, preparations for the upcoming Jeugdag.

His eyes look heavy under the weight of unsolved cases.

  • Maar hy kyk op toe hy 'n sag stem hoor wat hom roep.

But he looks up when he hears a soft voice calling him.

  • "Verskoon my, ek het hulp nodig," sê Elsa, maar haar stem is hees.

"Excuse me, I need help," says Elsa, but her voice is hoarse.

She can see how Gerrit looks at her, his eyes assessing her condition, his brain evaluating the situation.

  • "Wat is fout, mevrou?

    "What’s wrong, ma'am?"

he asks, trying to hide his own exhaustion.

"I'm having an allergic reaction," she struggles to answer.

"And there's also a theft I need to report."

"You need to get medical help first," says Gerrit emphatically, but Elsa shakes her head.

She doesn't want to be on the sidelines any longer, she wants to tell her story.

Just before she can explain further, she feels the room spinning around her and everything goes black.

  • Sy sink op die vloer in duie.

    She collapses to the floor.

A few seconds feel like an eternity for Gerrit, who immediately picks up his radio and calls for emergency help.

  • Binne minute arriveer paramedici en neem Elsa weg.

Within minutes, paramedics arrive and take Elsa away.

"I will make sure someone looks into your case," Gerrit promises to her conscious self.

    His words aren't just a duty-bound obligation.

He feels the urge to truly help, more than ever before.

As Elsa is on the road to recovery, she realizes that asking for help is not a sign of weakness but rather an act of strength and trust.

Meanwhile, Gerrit looks at his desk and his work with renewed purpose.

He now knows it’s not just about numbers but about people.

  • Hy maak 'n nota om Elsa se saak eerste ding daardie aand af te handel.

He makes a note to handle Elsa's case first thing that evening.

And so, between the cold wind blowing outside and the heartbeat of a busy station, two souls find a better understanding of themselves and the world around them.

The shadows of the upcoming Jeugdag remind them of the power of youth and the courage to change.
