The early morning air was sharp and clear in the Cederberg Mountains, where the autumn mist enveloped the world in silent thoughts.
Die berge staan hoog, kragtig en wys.
The mountains stood tall, powerful, and wise.
It was in this place that Annelize, Freek, and Johan gathered, in an attempt to find peace after the recent loss of their parents.
Annelize, the eldest, clutched the bag containing their parents' ashes tightly against her, while Freek and Johan walked shortly behind her.
Freek, with his usual bravado, picked up a stick and tapped it over the rocks, as if he wanted to break the silence.
But deep inside, he felt despondency, something he didn't easily admit.
Johan, remained behind, with his thoughts deeply caught in the past, slowly trying to trace the meaning of their parents' last fading moments.
Annelize het geweet sy moet sterk wees.
Annelize knew she had to be strong.
It was her idea to bring the ashes here.
Their parents had loved this place, and she was determined to fulfill their last wish.
But first, she had to address her own and her brothers' pain.
At the top of the last cliff, she stopped and turned around.
Before them lay the valley, red and gold from the autumn leaves, a picture of silence and calm.
"Ek weet dinge was moeilik," sê sy.
"I know things have been difficult," she said.
"Ons het verloor.
"We have lost.
But we can still hold onto each other as family."
"Freek slaan sy oë neer.
Freek lowered his eyes.
"Hoekom is ons hier?
"Why are we here?"
he asked, his voice a mix of irritation and uncertainty.
"Hulle is weg, Annelize.
"They are gone, Annelize."
Johan stepped closer, his eyes soft and searching.
"Maar ons is nie weg nie," sê hy kalm.
"But we are not gone," he said calmly.
"Ons is hier, en ons het mekaar.
"We are here, and we have each other."
Annelize looked from one brother to the other.
"Dis tyd om dinge uit te spreek.
"It's time to express ourselves.
We owe it to them, and to ourselves."
The old grievances began to surface like a stone rolled out of a river: Freek's rebellion, Johan's silence, Annelize's tendency to keep everything together.
They argued, didn't always agree, even cried a little.
But amidst the emotions, they found a place of understanding.
That day, on the edge of the cliff, they let the ashes blow out over the valley.
The pain they carried began to disappear along with the wind, carried away to the unknown.
Freek, with a newfound gentle look, gazed at his siblings.
"Thank you," he nodded, and for the first time, realized the value of family.
Annelize voel haar hart lig.
Annelize felt her heart lighten.
She knew she no longer had all the answers, but she understood that she was not alone.
Johan smiled in agreement, the peace of acceptance beginning to take root in his soul.
They walked back together, hand in hand, along the winding path, with the warm hues of autumn wafting over them – a season of change, a time of new beginnings.
