The air was thick and gray, a layer of dust lay over the deserted streets of Kaapstad.
Jaco walks slowly forward, with Mariska and Pieter close behind him.
The ruined buildings surround them like ghostly guards.
They have a goal in mind: to find the underground fountain in the Tafelberg-caves.
"We must get to the water," says Jaco, his voice firm.
He thinks of the people who count on his return; every drop counts in this barren world.
The wind started to blow, a cold reminder of the autumn that now prevails.
Leaves sway in the air, a beautiful contrast to the desolation around.
"They say the other group is camping near the map," points out Mariska, her eyes gleaming from the map in her hands.
Pieter knik, bang vir 'n moontlike ontmoeting.
Pieter nods, afraid of a possible encounter.
"We can't risk it," he adds seriously.
Jaco sighs and looks at the road ahead of them.
The turns to the cave are known for dangerous cliffs and slippery ground.
But moving through the rival's territory could lead to violence.
Briefly, however, thoughts of his former life overcome him—his family might still be here, somewhere.
They decide to choose the dangerous paths.
Every step is full of tension, but Jaco leads them skillfully.
The old paths of Kaapstad are reclaimed by nature.
Selfs in die vernietiging is daar 'n soort ruwe skoonheid.
Even in the destruction, there is a kind of rugged beauty.
Unexpectedly, they arrive at the base of the mountain.
Voor hulle is die rivaal se groep.
In front of them is the rival's group.
'n Man met 'n harde gesig, die leier, stap vorentoe.
A man with a hard face, the leader, steps forward.
"Wat soek julle hier?" vra hy tersluiks.
"What are you looking for here?" he asks tersely.
Jaco besluit om vrede te soek eerder as konflik.
Jaco decides to seek peace rather than conflict.
"Ons soek water. Net genoeg om te oorleef. Miskien kan ons help?"
"We are looking for water. Just enough to survive. Maybe we can help?"
The tension hangs in the air like heavy fog, but eventually the leader shakes his head and says, "Go. But don't come back."
He turns around and his group follows him.
With relieved hearts, Jaco, Mariska, and Pieter climb the path to the caves.
There, deep inside, they find the clear fountain.
Hulle vul die houers met vars water.
They fill the containers with fresh water.
The beautiful sounds of droplets echoing against the cave's walls bring new hope.
Back at the community, Jaco is greeted with joy and relief.
They have survived, thanks to his courage and composure.
Jaco het iets belangriks geleer.
Jaco has learned something important.
In hierdie nuwe wêreld was samewerking sleutels tot oorlewing.
In this new world, cooperation was the key to survival.
Together they can move forward, stronger than ever before.
And, with the security of water, Jaco might begin a path to the answer his heart seeks: wherever his family may be waiting for him.
