The autumn breeze whispers through the treetops in Kirstenbosch Botaniese Tuine, where the leaves stand in brilliant shades of gold and red.
Coenraad was in his element, ready to impress Elmarie with his knowledge of plants and the garden.
Walking beside him is Jaco, who is prepared to complement his friend's enthusiasm with playful remarks.
"Good morning," says Coenraad, after he welcomed Elmarie and Jaco.
Elmarie, met haar rugsak propvol avontuurgereedskap, glimlag breed.
Elmarie, with her backpack full of adventure gear, smiles broadly.
"Laat die tog begin!
"Let the journey begin!"
" sê sy.
she says.
They set their feet on the trails with a group of other visitors, led by an expert guide.
The rooskransfyntjies and suikerbosse shine in the sunshine.
But when the guide got emotional about the meaning of a plant, Coenraad noticed a narrow path that seemed to lead to a more colorful area.
"Kom, Elmarie," sê Coenraad met opdgewondenheid.
"Come, Elmarie," says Coenraad with excitement.
"Ek ken 'n vinniger roete.
"I know a faster route.
Jy gaan daarvan hou!
You're going to love it!"
Jaco rolls his eyes and pulls his raincoat tighter, his hallmark skepticism unmistakable.
Hulle draai weg van die ander besoekers.
They veer away from the other visitors.
The path winds through larger trees and dense bushes and grows increasingly narrower.
Elmarie giggles and shoots ahead, enjoying the challenging walk.
Eventually, however, the low-lying shrubs give way to thick foliage that completely covers the path.
"I think we're a bit lost," says Jaco, his hands in his pockets, his smartphone in a low battery crisis.
"Ek weet presies waar ons is," meesmuil Coenraad, hoewel selfs hy begin twyfel.
"I know exactly where we are," Coenraad smirks, although even he begins to doubt.
Finally, he admits it, running his hands restlessly through his hair.
"Okay, maybe we're a bit"—he pauses to phrase it correctly—"lost."
Just when hope begins to fade, Elmarie catches the cheerful sound of a family having an Easter picnic.
They enjoy loudly laughing children and the scent of eggs and sausages in the air.
The family, in good holiday spirit, offers to help.
Gratefully, the three accept directions from their new friends.
With a set of dedicated instructions, they are soon back on the right path.
Back at the main part of the gardens, with the view over the Helderberg, Coenraad lowers his thoughts.
"You know," he says to Elmarie and Jaco, "I think I shouldn't have tried so hard to get everything right."
"Jaco klap hom op die skouer.
Jaco pats him on the shoulder.
"No, mate, that was entertaining," he says, and they all burst out in laughter.
Elmarie knik.
Elmarie nods.
"It's the overwhelming adventures like this that make the best memories."
The sun begins to set, and the three friends walk hand in hand to the exit, much closer than earlier in the day.
Lorië overhead ring their farewell, with Kleynbegin they return home, but with a story they will cherish forever.
