It is here at the naval base where ships wait majestically, their shiny hulls glistening in the last rays of light.

Jaco stap ferm oor die dekadesoue houtplaveisel.

Jaco walks firmly on the decades-old wooden pavement.

Sy bootskappe in die hand het 'n duidelike doel – voorsiening vir sy komende toere.

His shopping list in hand has a clear goal – provisions for his upcoming tours.

Tog, diep binne hom, borrel 'n ander onrus.

Yet, deep within him, another unease stirs.

Hy het onlangs 'n aanbod gekry om op land te werk.

He recently received an offer to work on land.

Sy hart sê iets anders, maar sekerheid is 'n skaars ding.

His heart says something else, but certainty is a rare thing.

Voor hom staan Elmarie se winkel.

In front of him stands Elmarie's store.

'n Knus plekkie wat bekend is onder die matrose.

A cozy spot known among the sailors.

Die klokjie aan die deur lui vriendelik toe hy dit oopstoot.

The bell on the door rings friendly as he pushes it open.

Elmarie glimlag en wuif hom nader.

Elmarie smiles and waves him closer.

"Jaco!

"Jaco!

Ek het gehoor jy begin binnekort weer.

I heard you're starting again soon."

""Ja, ek is hier vir 'n paar dinge," antwoord hy skynbaar kalm, maar sy oë verraai sy onsekerheid.

"Yes, I'm here for a few things," he responds seemingly calm, but his eyes betray his uncertainty.

Elmarie kyk hom skerp aan.

Elmarie looks at him sharply.

Sy is wys, en ken die lewe op die wasserande.

She is wise and knows the life on the waterfronts.

"Blykbaar is daar meer wat jy nodig het as net voorsienings," sê sy en skiet reguit, 'n snuf in die neus vir meer as blote besigheid.

"Apparently, there's more you need than just provisions," she says, shooting straight, a nose for more than mere business.

Jaco huiwer, maar kort voor lank begin hy praat.

Jaco hesitates, but before long, he begins to speak.

Hy vertel van die werk op land, die veiliger opsies, en die vrees vir verandering.

He tells of the work on land, the safer options, and the fear of change.

Elmarie luister geduldig, onderbreek net so dan en wan met 'n vraag of 'n knik.

Elmarie listens patiently, interrupting only now and then with a question or a nod.

"Jy weet," sê sy later terwyl sy 'n blik boontjies oor die toonbank gly, "die water het sy eie lied, maar die land ook.

"You know," she says later while sliding a can of beans over the counter, "the water has its own song, but the land does too.

Wat sê jou hart?

What does your heart say?"

"Jaco staar na die items om hom – toue, kompasse, en so meer.

Jaco stares at the items around him – ropes, compasses, and so forth.

Elmarie hou aan, "Dis belangrik om jou eie pad te loop, selfs al is dit weg van verwagtinge af.

Elmarie continues, "It's important to walk your own path, even if it's away from expectations."

"Jaco glimlag skielik, 'n rustigheid blits oor sy gesig.

Jaco suddenly smiles, a calmness flashes across his face.

Dit het 'n vreemde manier van sin maak.

It makes a strange kind of sense.

Hy is klaar hier – vir nou.

He's done here – for now.

Die keuse lyk duidelik, al deel hy dit nie dadelik nie.

The choice seems clear, although he doesn't share it immediately.

Hy betaal vir sy goed en bedank Elmarie hartlik.

He pays for his goods and thanks Elmarie warmly.

Wanneer hy terugstap uit die winkel, voel hy lichter, sy voete bietjie sekerder.

As he walks back out of the store, he feels lighter, his steps a little more assured.

Die groot skepe wag, en dalk ook 'n lewe op land.

The large ships await, and perhaps a life on land as well.

Wat ook al hy kies, sal sy eie beslissing wees.

Whatever he chooses, it will be his own decision.

Met sy aankope onder die arm, draai hy 'n laaste maal na die winkel om.

With his purchases under his arm, he turns one last time towards the store.

Elmarie knipoog en lig haar hand.

Elmarie winks and raises her hand.

Jaco draai glimlaggend terug na die see.

Jaco turns back to the sea with a smile.

Hy het nog 'n lang reis voor hom, maarsy koers is uiteindelik gevestig.

He has a long journey ahead, but his course is finally set.
