The sun scorched mercilessly, and the earth looked like a vast, cracked sheet beneath their feet.
Riaan wiped the dust from his face and stared at the endless horizon.
His heart was heavy and his thoughts restless, full of guilt, but he had to stay strong.
Vir Elsie en Thabo.
For Elsie and Thabo.
"Ons moet aanhou," het Riaan gesê.
"We have to keep going," Riaan said.
His voice was determined, but even he could hear the doubt behind the words.
Elsie, her face burnt by the sun, sighed softly.
"I hope you know what you are doing," she murmured, her eyes full of worry.
Thabo walked silently, his young face just a mask of perseverance.
The world had stopped being challenging — it was simply survival.
They were on their way to a place of legend, an oasis promising a safe haven in this post-apocalyptic world.
The drought was unbearable, and all Riaan could think about was how he lost his family.
He didn't want to lose these two as well.
But the signs of help were scarce, shriveled in weak beacons that pointed into the desert.
Daar was gevaarlike besluite te neem.
There were dangerous decisions to be made.
Riaan decided to take a shortcut through the barren desert, despite Elsie's fears.
"It's our only chance," he answered that morning, his eyes fixed on the endless sea of sand dunes before them.
When the sandstorm began to fill the air, panic crept into their minds.
The wind roared and howled, their view limited to a mechanical whirl of dust.
In the chaos, Riaan realized he was alone.
His heart began to pound as never before.
The choice was simple, but difficult: Stay in the storm or move on.
With arms folded over his head, Riaan went down on his knees.
"I will not lose someone again," he muttered.
The storm wailed and hissed, but eventually, it began to subside.
And there, with rains of sand preparing to settle, he saw two faces he loved so much.
Elsie en Thabo het uitgegrawe.
Elsie and Thabo had dug out.
Stowwerig, maar lewendig.
Dusty, but alive.
The togetherness flowed through his body like a warm glow.
"Daar!
"There!"
Thabo shouted, pointing with a thin arm.
In the far distance, just a glimmer, but definite, there was water.
The oasis, no longer just a tale, but a reality.
Riaan smiled for the first time in many days.
He embraced his friends, a new hope born within him.
When he looked back, the guilt was still there, but it had lost a bit of its power.
Here, with Elsie and Thabo, he learned that strength lies in unity.
And sometimes survival means allowing others to be strong too.
The journey was not yet over, but they had achieved the first great victory.
Together, step by step, they could face anything.
