  • Die lug was koud en skerp.

The air was cold and sharp.

  • Elmar staan aan die voet van Tafelberg.

Elmar stands at the foot of Tafelberg.

  • Hy kyk op, sy hart klop vinnig.

He looks up, his heart beating fast.

  • Hoogte vrees hy.

    He fears heights.

  • Vandat hy kan onthou, was dit daar.

Ever since he can remember, it was there.

  • Toe het hy as kind van 'n speelraam geval.

Then, as a child, he had fallen from a jungle gym.

  • Nou moet hy oor sy vrees kom.

Now he must overcome his fear.

Alma and Pieter, his faithful friends, stand next to him.

They had promised to climb with him.

  • Die trio begin klim.

    The trio begins to climb.

The ground beneath their feet is wet and slippery.

  • Wind waai deur die fynbos.

    Wind blows through the fynbos.

The mountain is silent, except for the birds' calls.

  • Elmar trek sy handskoene stywer.

    Elmar tightens his gloves.

  • Sy hande bewe.

    His hands are trembling.

  • Hy moet sterk wees.

    He must be strong.

  • Hy wil bewys dat hy kan verander.

He wants to prove that he can change.

As the path becomes steeper, Elmar's anxiety rises.

  • Die mistigheid maak die uitsig onseker.

The mist makes the view uncertain.

“We can take a break,” suggests Pieter.

Elmar looks at the thick mist slowly rolling over the mountaintop and shakes his head.

  • “Ek moet aanhou,” sê hy.

“I must keep going,” he says.

His voice is firm, though he feels fear welling up in his stomach.

  • Aan 'n skerp draai bly Elmar agter.

At a sharp turn, Elmar lags behind.

Pieter and Alma slow down, and he feels the fear creeping back into his thoughts.

  • Hy is alleen met sy gedagtes.

He is alone with his thoughts.

  • "Jy kan nie," fluister 'n stem binne-in hom.

"You can't," whispers a voice inside him.

  • Maar hy weet, diep binne hom, hy moet voortgaan.

But he knows, deep within, he must carry on.

  • Elke treetjie vorentoe is 'n oorwinning.

Each step forward is a victory.

  • Met laaste kragte druk Elmar homself verder.

With the last of his strength, Elmar pushes himself further.

  • Hy kyk nie af nie, net vorentoe.

He doesn’t look down, only forward.

  • Hy weet die punt is naby.

He knows the top is near.

The wind rushes past his ears like an old friend encouraging him.

The last few steps are the hardest, but also the most rewarding.

  • En skielik staan hy daar.

    And suddenly, he stands there.

  • Bo die wolke, bo die vrees.

Above the clouds, above the fear.

The rest of the city lies far below.

  • Hy asem diep in.

    He breathes in deeply.

  • Die vars lug vul sy longe.

The fresh air fills his lungs.

  • Dit voel soos friede.

    It feels like peace.

Not long after, Pieter and Alma's faces appear through the mist.

  • Hulle lag, omhels Elmar.

    They laugh, embracing Elmar.

  • Hy het dit gedoen.

    He has done it.

  • Hy het sy vrees oorkom.

    He has overcome his fear.

  • Elmar glimlag.

    Elmar smiles.

His fear may not be gone, but he knows he can fight against it.

  • Die ondervinding verryk sy moed.

    The experience enriches his courage.

  • Nou weet hy, hy is sterker as wat hy ooit besef het.

Now he knows, he is stronger than he ever realized.

  • Tafelberg het hom iets kosbaar gegee: selfvertroue.

Tafelberg has given him something precious: self-confidence.

Beyond the clouds, in the bright winter sun, Elmar has discovered something new within himself.
