The remnants of Johannesburg lie ominously still under a gray winter sky.
The wind whistles through the broken windows of what were once luxurious buildings.
Elmarie walks slowly over the deserted and debris-covered streets.
She pulls her coat tighter as the icy cold sweeps over her.
She slowly searches for food and water among the ruins.
Haar oorlewing het haar vaardig gemaak.
Her survival has made her skilled.
Sy moes wees.
She had to be.
Her thoughts sometimes drift back to the days when Johannesburg was full of life, when the streets were filled with people and cars, and the sky shone brightly over the city.
Maar daardie dae is verby.
But those days are gone.
As she climbs over a pile of stones, her eye catches a shadow that quickly moves across the street.
Sy vries en hou haar asem op.
She freezes and holds her breath.
Finally, she sees him—a man, slightly shady, the type you don't easily trust.
Hendrik.
Hendrik.
He stands a little way off, rummaging through an abandoned shop.
Elmarie blaas haar warm asem in haar hande en skuif nader.
Elmarie blows her warm breath into her hands and moves closer.
"Soek jy ook kos?
"Are you also looking for food?"
" vra sy skielik.
she asks suddenly.
Hendrik looks up, slightly shy, but gives a short nod.
"Ja, dis skaars.
"Yes, it's scarce.
Die winter sal nie maklik wees nie.
The winter will not be easy."
"Daar heers 'n gespanne stilte tussen hulle.
There is a tense silence between them.
Both know that each has to fend for themselves in this devastated world.
But there is a need for trust, for connection, for survival.
"Perhaps we can pool our resources," Hendrik suggests, though his voice remains distant.
Elmarie huiwer.
Elmarie hesitates.
Vertroue is gevaarlik.
Trust is dangerous.
Maar tog, iets in Hendrik se oë laat haar dink dat hy opreg is.
Yet, something in Hendrik's eyes makes her think he is sincere.
While they must survive, she feels the necessity to take the chance.
"Alright," she finally says, "but we stay vigilant."
Days pass, and they often work together now.
They share their meager catch, even if it's just cans of beans they rescue from broken cupboards.
Elmarie begins to believe that there might be a future, even if it's vague and uncertain.
One morning, as dawn breaks over the city, Hendrik tells her about rumors of a safe zone—a community trying to rebuild things.
It is an opportunity that Elmarie doesn't want to miss, but it also makes her think.
Wat as dit net nog 'n lokval is?
What if it's just another trap?
Yet, she decides to trust his information, partly because she no longer wants to be alone.
Soon after, their search routes are interrupted by another danger.
A group of competitors, with shifty eyes and guns, are also seeking the same scarce resources.
Elmarie and Hendrik must be quick, must work together to escape the clutches of the raiders.
They move swiftly between the buildings, short of breath and adrenaline their only allies.
They manage to get away, hiding in a dark alley as the others' voices slowly fade.
The pounding of their hearts begins to calm, and it is in this stillness that something changes.
Elmarie kyk na Hendrik, en iets in albei se kop knak.
Elmarie looks at Hendrik, and something clicks in both of their minds.
Daar is 'n begrip, 'n ongesproke belofte.
There is an understanding, an unspoken promise.
This world is harsh, but together they are stronger.
With newfound trust in each other, they set their course towards the safe zone, hope burning stronger than the cold wind around them.
Now they know that trust and cooperation are keys to survival, and maybe, just maybe, to a new beginning.
