Karel stares out over the vast savannah of the Krugerwildtuin.
It is autumn, and the leaves' golden-brown shades climb above the trees.
He has long been a ranger, but the problem of poachers makes him dispirited.
His heart's desire is to protect the endangered rhino population.
Marlene, 'n nuwe aangesig in die span, staan langs hom.
Marlene, a new face in the team, stands next to him.
Haar oë blink met idealisme.
Her eyes shine with idealism.
She is new, yes, but determined to make a difference.
"Perhaps we should try new methods," she says enthusiastically.
She suggests that they try using unmanned airplanes, drones, to monitor the rhinos.
Karel sug diep.
Karel sighs deeply.
Hy twyfel oor nuwe tegnologie.
He doubts new technology.
Maar wat as dit werk?
But what if it works?
Hulle het niks om te verloor nie.
They have nothing to lose.
"Goed, laat ons probeer," stem hy uiteindelik in.
"Alright, let's try," he agrees eventually.
Die volgende dag is dit Werkersdag.
The next day is Workers' Day.
It feels symbolic, as if the country is celebrating workers' efforts and they, like Karel and Marlene, are celebrating something bigger – the safe work of the rhinos.
The sky is bright blue, and the sounds of the park fill the air.
Later that day, while they patrol the area, they receive a warning from the drones.
A group of poachers is heading towards the rhinos.
Die tyd is min.
Time is short.
Karel and Marlene rush to the location, their hearts pounding like drums.
Hulle arriveer betyds.
They arrive in time.
Die stropers is verras en vlug.
The poachers are surprised and flee.
Die renosters is veilig.
The rhinos are safe.
After the crowd has subsided, Karel and Marlene stand hand in hand in silence.
Dankbaarheid voel elke hoekie van Karel se hart.
Gratitude fills every corner of Karel's heart.
Hy kyk na Marlene.
He looks at Marlene.
"Baie dankie," sê hy, sy stem sag.
"Thank you very much," he says, his voice soft.
Marlene glimlag.
Marlene smiles.
Sy het haarself bewys.
She has proven herself.
Karel voel 'n nuwe hoop opborrel.
Karel feels a new hope welling up.
He is ready to embrace change and is proud of the new generation.
Die herfslug is koel, maar vol beloftes.
The autumn air is cool but full of promises.
Together they watch the sun set over the majestic Krugerwildtuin.
The world is vast, the struggle intense, but they are stronger – and ultimately, the rhinos are safe.
